Position Summary

Piedmont Newton and Piedmont Walton are hiring surgicalists/acute care surgery providers to both locations in Georgia. These surgeons will provide emergency department surgical response, oversight of inpatient surgical rounds, and inpatient surgical consultation. The surgicalist will work primarily in the inpatient setting and is paired with ambulatory (office-based) general surgeons, so that hospital-based acute and inpatient care is deliberately separated from scheduled clinic and elective operating room work.

Working twelve shifts per month with each shift defined as a 24-hour shift from 7:00 a.m. to 6:59 a.m., the surgicalist provides emergency department surgical response. Each 24-hour shift consists of twelve hours onsite with twelve hours remote and responding if necessary. Three of these twelve shifts per month must include a Friday/Saturday/Sunday basically establishing one weekend per month. The scheduling of the cadence of the shifts may differ slightly from hospital to hospital.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Education and training: MD or DO with completion of an accredited general surgery residency.
• Certification: Board certification, or board eligibility with a defined path to certification, in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery. Fellowship training in acute care surgery is valued but not required.
• Licensure: Active, unrestricted Georgia medical license (or eligibility), DEA registration, and eligibility for medical staff privileges at Piedmont Newton Hospital.
• Clinical competence: Demonstrated competence across the breadth of emergency and inpatient general surgery, including acute abdominal and soft-tissue conditions.
• Team orientation: Commitment to protocol-driven, team-based care, prompt emergency response, and collaborative work with emergency medicine, hospital medicine, critical care, and advanced practice providers.
