Job description

The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville is seeking a board-certified/board-eligible plastic surgeon to join a growing academic-affiliated plastic and reconstructive surgery practice. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in microsurgical reconstruction who are looking to develop a broad, high-complexity reconstructive practice while contributing to the continued growth of the Division.

As the region’s academic medical center, Magnet® recognized hospital, and Level I Trauma Center, The University of Tennessee Medical Center serves as a major tertiary referral center for East Tennessee, Southeast Kentucky, and Western North Carolina. The medical center is also home to the region’s dedicated Cancer Institute, supporting a high-volume oncologic and reconstructive practice.

The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery currently consists of five plastic surgeons with expertise spanning general plastic surgery, oncologic and trauma reconstruction, microsurgery, and aesthetic surgery. The practice is based primarily on the main campus, which includes the 710-bed hospital and an adjacent ambulatory surgery center.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a broad reconstructive practice with particular emphasis on microsurgical breast reconstruction, lymphedema surgery, lower-extremity reconstruction and limb salvage, and oncologic reconstruction. Microsurgical expertise is strongly preferred, with formal fellowship training in microsurgery desirable.

The institution has an established Comprehensive Lymphedema Program, recently designated a Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN) Referral Network of Excellence. The Division is also expanding collaborative programs in lower-extremity reconstruction and limb salvage, providing opportunities for the incoming surgeon to participate in and help develop growing regional programs.

The position includes an affiliate faculty appointment with the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine, with opportunities to teach general surgery residents and medical students. Robust research opportunities are available through collaborations within the medical center, the University of Tennessee, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The ideal candidate is hardworking, collaborative, and entrepreneurial, with the desire to innovate, develop new programs, and become a leader in a growing academic medical community.

Knoxville, home to the University of Tennessee and a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offers a low cost of living, excellent quality of life, outdoor recreation, four distinct seasons, and a growing dining and cultural scene.
