Neurosurgereon - St Louis, MO (Accepts any state license!)

Position Summary

Provide comprehensive onsite neurosurgical care to veterans at the John Cochran VA Medical Center. The physician will deliver clinic, operative, consultative, postoperative, and emergency coverage as part of a minimum three-neurosurgeon pool. One neurosurgeon must be onsite daily, with coordinated after-hours coverage and an alternate credentialed surgeon available when needed.

Clinical Responsibilities

- Evaluate and treat neurosurgical patients in the outpatient clinic, at the inpatient bedside, and in the operating room.

- Maintain an expected clinic volume of approximately 12 to 14 patients per clinic session.

- Perform an expected minimum of two spinal decompression procedures or one spinal fusion procedure per operating-room day.

- Provide spine surgery, including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar decompression, fusion, instrumentation, discectomy, laminectomy, corpectomy, and related revision procedures.

- Provide cranial and cerebrospinal fluid procedures, including cranial drainage, ventricular catheter and shunt placement or revision, and other procedures within granted privileges.

- Perform wound management, intraspinal lesion excision or biopsy, dural repair, microsurgery, and peripheral nerve procedures when clinically indicated and privileged.

- Remain present in the operating suite throughout all assigned neurosurgical procedures.

- Provide postoperative rounds in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and hospital wards, including weekend rounding when clinically indicated.

- Communicate test results, provide discharge and follow-up instructions, and complete timely documentation in the VA electronic health record.

Professional and Administrative Responsibilities

- Participate in quarterly neurosurgery staff meetings and morbidity and mortality conferences when presenting an assigned case.

- Complete quality management documentation for procedures, complications, and patient outcomes.

- Participate in focused and ongoing professional practice evaluations, peer review, and continuous quality improvement activities.

- Follow VA medication, infection control, patient safety, privacy, and medical staff requirements.

- Report patient safety incidents promptly and complete required VA reporting within 24 hours.

Schedule and Call Coverage

- Clinic and operating-room scheduling occurs during VA business hours, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as directed by the Chief of Staff and coordinated with the facility.

- Provide one to two hours of Saturday and Sunday rounding when routine postoperative inpatient care is required.

- Participate in rotating on-call coverage whenever the clinic is closed, including evenings, weekends, and federal holidays.

- Remain available for telephone consultation within 15 minutes and arrive onsite within 60 minutes when notified. These response times are mandatory.

- Do not accept simultaneous call obligations that could interfere with VA response requirements.

- Coordinate with an alternate neurosurgeon who is credentialed and privileged at the facility and available when the primary on-call surgeon is engaged in another emergency or surgical case.

Required Qualifications

- MD or DO degree with completion of the education and training required to practice neurosurgery independently.

- Current board certification or documented board eligibility through the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

- Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. A current or prior restricted, suspended, revoked, surrendered, or denied license is disqualifying under the PWS.

- Current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification or accepted equivalent.

- Current Drug Enforcement Administration registration and National Provider Identifier.

- Demonstrated competence performing the required cranial, spinal, postoperative, and emergency neurosurgical services.

- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.

- Ability to complete VA credentialing, privileging, orientation, electronic health record training, and all mandatory training before providing care.

- Current continuing medical education, required immunizations and health screenings, federal work authorization, and eligibility to participate in federal healthcare programs.

Performance Expectations

- Practice only within approved privileges and meet VA, Joint Commission, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and nationally recognized standards.

- Report on time for scheduled clinics and procedures and remain dependable throughout assigned onsite and on-call coverage.

- Maintain all licenses, registrations, certifications, privileges, and required training throughout the assignment.

- Support continuity of care through timely consultations, documentation, postoperative follow-up, and communication with VA clinical staff.
