Major Duties of the Position:
- Lead the surgical services department, ensuring quality care and optimal outcomes for the veteran outpatient and inpatient population.
- Oversee the delivery of patient-centered surgical care in both outpatient and inpatient settings, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
- Perform and supervise a wide range of surgical procedures, ensuring adherence to best practices and standards of care.
- Collaborate with other specialists to provide comprehensive surgical care, including cases that may require multidisciplinary management.
- Teach and mentor medical students, residents, and fellows, contributing to educational development programs affiliated with the University of New Mexico, School of Medicine.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to patient care, teaching, and research, and be eligible for a faculty appointment in the Department of Surgery at the University of New Mexico.
- Ensure the surgical services department meets all regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives and participate in surgical research to advance the field of surgery.
- Manage departmental budgets, staffing, and resources to ensure efficient and effective delivery of surgical services.
- Foster a collaborative, positive work environment that promotes professional growth and development for surgical staff.

Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Highly qualified individuals may be eligible for a recruitment/relocation incentive in accordance with agency policy. To receive consideration for an incentive, the selectee must be among the best qualified and meet the criteria established in the VA Handbook 5007 Part VI Chapter 2. Service agreement required.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
- Paid Time Off: 50–55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5-day paid absence for CME)
- Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
- Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
- Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
- CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
- Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
- Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restrictions on moonlighting
