Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Indiana University Health Physicians are actively recruiting a full-time board certified/eligible General Surgeon to join the faculty as a Clinical Instructor/ Surgery Team Lead for the AMPATH partnership in Eldoret, Kenya. In this role, you will support the tripartite mission by providing exceptional clinical care, educating future clinicians, and promoting advances in research. You will have the opportunity to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and support sustainable systems and protocols of care. In addition, you will function as an ambassador of the educational mission between North American institutions and Kenyan partners of AMPATH.

Your clinical responsibilities will be to provide supervision for registrars, medical officers, clinical officers, medical students, etc. and assist in providing high quality care for patients on the wards, clinics (general surgery and surgical oncology), and to western Kenya via outreach. You will also take call, as primary duties allow, and no more than equitably shared among colleagues.

You will function as a visiting lecturer to Moi University (MU) Department of Surgery and Anesthesia and become a member of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Division of General Surgery. You may serve as a faculty mentor for Master of Medicine (MMed) thesis projects. In this role, you will encourage the selection of research topics, foster skills in review of literature, study design, data collection and interpretation, and presentation.

Moi University (MU) - The teaching hospital for MU and the AMPATH Surgery Team Lead is Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. As one of Kenya’s two referral hospitals, MTRH serves a population of approximately 24 million from western Kenya and neighboring countries. The MTRH Campus includes the AMPATH
Centre as well as the Majaliwa Surgical Center and smaller operating theatres within the Riley Mother Baby Hospital, Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital, and the new neurosurgical ward. In January 2020, MTRH partnered with the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and South Africa (COSECSA) to offer an alternative post-graduate training program in surgery (general, orthopedics, urology). MTRH and COSECSA also co-host a pediatric surgery fellowship centered at the Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital.

Basic Qualifications:
• Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy
• American Board of surgery board eligible/board certified surgeon
• Ability to obtain IN licensure
• Valid, current passport and ability to travel internationally, nationally, and locally
• Experience or training in an academic setting
• Experience working with diverse cultures and in underserved or under-resourced communities
