A confidential behavioral health organization in St. Charles, Illinois is seeking an experienced Psychiatric Medical Director with a strong background in addiction psychiatry and substance use treatment.
The program provides multiple levels of behavioral healthcare, including detoxification, residential treatment, Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) services, with approximately 100 total beds/program capacity.
The Medical Director will provide clinical leadership while remaining actively involved in patient care. Job Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership:
Provide psychiatric and medical leadership across detox, residential, PHP, and IOP programs.
Establish and maintain high standards of psychiatric care.
Provide clinical guidance to physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, and interdisciplinary teams.
Support quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical best practices.
Provide Medical Director oversight and participate in program-level clinical decision-making.
Patient Care:
Evaluate and treat patients with psychiatric and substance use disorders.
Provide psychiatric medication management and ongoing treatment planning.
Support medically appropriate detoxification protocols.
Manage patients with co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions.
Participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning.
Provide appropriate clinical follow-up throughout the patient's level of care.
Addiction Treatment:
Support evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders.
Provide expertise related to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and addiction-focused pharmacotherapy.
Collaborate with clinical teams to develop individualized recovery and treatment plans.
Help ensure continuity of care as patients transition between detox, residential, PHP, and IOP services.
Team Collaboration & Program Support:
Collaborate closely with therapists, nursing, case management, operations, and other clinical leaders.
Provide consultation and guidance regarding complex psychiatric and addiction cases.
Support appropriate documentation and compliance standards.
Participate in call coverage and respond to clinical needs as required.
Contribute to ongoing program development and clinical improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Required:
MD or DO with completed psychiatry training.
Ability to practice psychiatry in Illinois and maintain appropriate licensure and credentials.
Strong clinical experience treating patients with substance use disorders.
Experience with psychiatric medication management and dual-diagnosis populations.
Comfortable working in detoxification, residential, PHP, and/or IOP environments.
Willingness to work a minimum of 30 hours per week on-site.
Strong communication, leadership, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
Preferred:
Fellowship or formal training in Addiction Psychiatry.
Addiction Medicine experience or certification.
Significant experience with MAT and substance use treatment.
Previous Medical Director or clinical leadership experience.
Experience overseeing behavioral health programs or multidisciplinary treatment teams.
Experience treating complex co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders.
Working Hours
Minimum 30 hours per week on-site
Schedule ideally distributed across at least four days per week
Three 10-hour days may be considered but are not preferred
Call coverage required, anticipated to be at least once per week
Benefits may be available at a full-time level depending on schedule and eligibility

The ideal candidate is a clinically strong, collaborative psychiatrist who combines addiction expertise with effective leadership skills.
You should be comfortable working directly with patients while also providing clinical direction across multiple levels of care. Experience in detox and residential behavioral health is particularly valuable, as is a demonstrated commitment to evidence-based addiction treatment and high-quality patient outcomes.
Program Overview:
Approximately 100 total beds/program capacity
Current census of approximately 80 patients across detox and residential services
Approximately 20% of the detox/residential census is typically detox
Approximately 40 patients across PHP/IOP services
Comprehensive treatment for substance use disorders, psychiatric conditions, and dual-diagnosis patients
Compensation & Benefits:
Competitive compensation based on experience, schedule, and scope of responsibility
Compensation prorated for part-time arrangements
Full-time compensation target ideally under $400,000 annually
Benefits may be available at full-time levels, subject to eligibility
