A large, established freestanding psychiatric hospital in the Greater Tampa Bay area is seeking an experienced Psychiatrist Medical Director to provide clinical leadership for a comprehensive inpatient behavioral health and substance-use treatment program.
This is a senior physician leadership opportunity designed for a psychiatrist who enjoys combining clinical care with program development, physician mentorship, quality improvement, and operational collaboration. The position offers a competitive compensation package of $450,000+, a predictable weekday schedule, and strong clinical support from psychiatric APPs and a multidisciplinary hospital team.
The Medical Director will play a key role in advancing clinical excellence, strengthening physician engagement, ensuring regulatory readiness, and supporting the continued growth of a high-performing behavioral health program.
Facility & Clinical Environment:
The hospital is a 100+ bed inpatient psychiatric facility providing acute stabilization and treatment for a diverse patient population. Services include:
Adult and senior psychiatric care
Dual-diagnosis and co-occurring disorder treatment
Substance-use treatment and medically supported detoxification
Adolescent behavioral health services
Clinical presentations include:
Mood disorders
Psychotic disorders
Anxiety and trauma-related disorders
Suicidal ideation and behavioral crises
Substance-use disorders
Complex psychiatric and medical comorbidities
The Medical Director will work alongside psychiatrists, psychiatric APPs, nurses, therapists, social workers, case managers, and hospital leadership to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care.
Position Highlights:
Annual compensation
W2 employment with a stable hospital-employed model
Monday–Friday leadership schedule
Weekend coverage approximately two weekends per month
APPs manage first-call responsibilities
Psychiatrist provides backup and escalation support
Dedicated psychiatric APP support
Experienced multidisciplinary clinical teams

Job Responsibilities
Provide clinical leadership and oversight for inpatient psychiatric services
Establish and maintain standards for safe, effective, evidence-based patient care
Partner with executive, nursing, quality, and operational leaders to improve clinical outcomes
Provide mentorship, guidance, and oversight to psychiatrists and psychiatric APPs
Support physician recruitment, onboarding, engagement, and professional development
Participate in medical executive committee activities, peer review, utilization management, and quality initiatives
Monitor clinical outcomes, documentation quality, treatment protocols, and patient safety practices
Support compliance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and accreditation standards
Promote continuous improvement across clinical operations and patient care delivery
Provide direct psychiatric care as part of the agreed clinical and administrative responsibilities
Participate in scheduled weekend coverage, with APPs serving as first call
Qualifications
MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school
Board-certified or board-eligible in Psychiatry
Eligible for an unrestricted Florida medical license
Experience in inpatient, acute psychiatric, or hospital-based behavioral health settings
Demonstrated ability to lead physicians and advanced practice providers
Strong knowledge of psychiatric quality standards, compliance, utilization management, and interdisciplinary care models
Prior Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, or similar physician leadership experience preferred
Experience with addiction psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, adolescent behavioral health, or dual-diagnosis populations preferred
Ability to complete Florida-required Level 2 healthcare background screening
