PM&R Medical Director – Inpatient Rehabilitation | Leadership + Clinical Practice | Waterbury, CT
Our confidential client is seeking a Board Certified or Board Eligible Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Physician to serve as Medical Director of a well-established inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut.
This is an excellent opportunity for a PM&R physician who wants to combine meaningful inpatient clinical care with physician leadership. The Medical Director will partner with executive leadership and an experienced interdisciplinary rehabilitation team to support clinical excellence, quality improvement, physician engagement, and continued program growth.

Work Environment
This is an on-site, hospital-based inpatient rehabilitation position in Waterbury, Connecticut.
You will work closely with physicians, nurses, physical/occupational/speech therapists, case management, consulting specialists, and hospital leadership. The role offers a collaborative environment where the Medical Director can maintain an active clinical practice while helping guide the rehabilitation program's clinical direction and operational priorities.
Job Responsibilities
The physician will provide comprehensive inpatient PM&R services, including:
Admission evaluations and consultations
Daily inpatient rounds
Comprehensive history and physical examinations
Individualized rehabilitation treatment planning
Functional, neuromuscular, and musculoskeletal assessments
Pain and spasticity management
Medical management of medically complex rehabilitation patients
Diagnostic and therapeutic injections
EMG/NCS when applicable
Prevention and management of secondary rehabilitation complications
Collaboration with consulting specialists
Emergency rehabilitation consultations
Accurate and compliant clinical documentation
Medical Director Responsibilities
The Medical Director will:
Lead interdisciplinary rehabilitation team conferences
Partner with executive leadership on strategic initiatives
Develop and enhance clinical policies and procedures
Drive quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
Support CMS, Joint Commission, and IRF compliance
Mentor physicians and multidisciplinary clinical teams
Promote evidence-based rehabilitation practices
Support physician recruitment, onboarding, and retention
Improve patient satisfaction and rehabilitation outcomes
Help expand rehabilitation services and community partnerships
Patient Population
The physician will care for patients recovering from:
Stroke
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
Parkinson's disease
Multiple sclerosis
Neuromuscular disorders
Orthopedic trauma
Hip and knee replacement
Polytrauma
Amputation
Chronic pain
General medical debility
Functional decline
Other medically complex rehabilitation conditions
Qualifications
Required:
MD or DO from an accredited medical school
Board Certified or Board Eligible in PM&R
Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited PM&R residency
Connecticut medical license or eligibility for licensure
Active DEA registration or ability to obtain one
Strong communication and leadership skills
Commitment to evidence-based rehabilitation medicine
Preferred:
2+ years of inpatient rehabilitation/IRF experience
Previous Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Chief of PM&R, or comparable leadership experience
Experience leading interdisciplinary rehabilitation teams
Knowledge of CMS, IRF-PAI, Joint Commission standards, and rehabilitation quality metrics
Experience with EMG/NCS
Spasticity management and Botox
Ultrasound-guided or other therapeutic injections
Musculoskeletal medicine/interventional rehabilitation
