A national rehabilitation organization is seeking a PM&R Physician to serve as Medical Director of a brand-new inpatient rehabilitation hospital opening in Aiken, South Carolina in Fall 2026.
This is an opportunity to come in before the doors open and help shape the clinical direction, interdisciplinary culture, and rehabilitation program from the beginning. The physician will maintain an active inpatient PM&R practice while serving as the hospital’s senior physician leader.
What You’ll Do
- Provide inpatient PM&R care, consultations, admission evaluations, and daily rounding
- Develop and oversee individualized rehabilitation treatment plans
- Manage patients with complex neurological, orthopedic, and medical rehabilitation needs
- Lead interdisciplinary rehabilitation team conferences
- Partner directly with hospital executive leadership
- Help develop clinical policies, standards, and best practices
- Drive quality improvement and patient-safety initiatives
- Support physician and clinical staff education
- Participate in medical staff recruitment, onboarding, and development
- Oversee required IRF documentation, including PAS, IPOC, progress notes, admission orders, and IRF-PAI
- Support compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and medical-staff standards
- Perform electrodiagnostic medicine, injections, or other PM&R procedures when appropriate to the physician’s practice
Patient Population
The hospital will care for patients recovering from conditions including stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, neurological disorders, amputations, joint replacements, chronic pain, cardiopulmonary conditions, respiratory failure, complex medical conditions, and other diagnoses requiring intensive inpatient rehabilitation.
The facility will also provide specialized services including spasticity management, dialysis support, 24/7 respiratory care, complex wound management, and one-to-one therapy.
Qualifications
- MD or DO
- Completion of an accredited Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency
- Board Certified in PM&R or actively participating in the certification process
- Current or eligible South Carolina medical license
- Current practice in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
- Strong communication, clinical judgment, and leadership ability
- Comfortable working collaboratively with physicians, nursing, therapy, and hospital administration
Preferred experience includes:
- Prior Medical Director or physician-leadership experience
- Inpatient rehabilitation / IRF practice
- Interdisciplinary team leadership
- CMS and IRF documentation requirements
- Quality-improvement initiatives
- EMG/NCS
- Spasticity management
- Diagnostic or therapeutic injections
Compensation & Benefits
The current recruiting range is $400,000–$500,000, depending on experience and leadership background.
