We are recruiting a PM&R Physician to serve as Medical Director of a brand-new, 42-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut.

This is not a Medical Director role where you simply inherit an established program and maintain the status quo.

You will have the opportunity to help shape the clinical culture, establish strong physician practices, influence quality and patient-care standards, and work alongside hospital leadership as the rehabilitation program grows.

At the same time, you will remain clinically active and continue doing what you trained to do: practice rehabilitation medicine and help medically complex patients regain function, independence, and quality of life.

The Role

The Medical Director will maintain an active inpatient PM&R practice while providing physician leadership across the rehabilitation program.

You will work closely with hospital executive leadership, nursing, therapy, case management, medical staff, and consulting physicians to support outstanding patient care and build an effective interdisciplinary rehabilitation program.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide full-time inpatient Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation services
• Perform admissions, rounding, consultations, and ongoing medical management
• Lead and participate in interdisciplinary rehabilitation team conferences
• Collaborate with hospital leadership on clinical policies, procedures, and standards of care
• Identify and address clinical issues affecting quality, safety, and patient outcomes
• Support quality improvement and evidence-based rehabilitation practices
• Provide clinical guidance and education to physicians, nurses, therapists, and other members of the care team
• Help establish a collaborative, high-performing physician culture as the hospital grows
• Maintain accurate and compliant inpatient rehabilitation documentation

Patient Population

This is a true inpatient rehabilitation environment caring for patients recovering from conditions such as:

• Stroke
• Traumatic brain injury
• Spinal cord injury
• Parkinson's disease and other neurological disorders
• Amputation
• Joint replacement and orthopedic conditions
• Chronic pain and movement disorders
• Cardiopulmonary and respiratory conditions
• Complex wounds
• Renal and medically complex conditions
• Significant functional decline following illness, injury, or hospitalization

The hospital will also offer specialty services including spasticity management, dialysis, complex wound care, and 24/7 respiratory support, supported by a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team.

What We're Looking For

Required

• MD or DO
• Completion of an accredited Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency
• Board Certified, Board Eligible, or actively progressing toward certification in PM&R
• Current practice experience in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
• Ability to obtain and maintain appropriate Connecticut medical licensure and credentials
• Strong clinical judgment and communication skills
• Ability to work effectively with physicians, therapists, nursing, administration, and hospital leadership

Preferred — Not Required

Previous Medical Director experience is valuable, but we are not limiting the search to physicians who already hold the title.

We are also interested in accomplished inpatient physiatrists who have demonstrated leadership and are ready to take the next step in their careers.

Experience with any of the following is particularly valuable:

• Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (IRF)
• Physician or clinical leadership
• Interdisciplinary rehabilitation teams
• Quality improvement
• Staff education or physician mentorship
• Rehabilitation documentation and compliance
• Complex neurologic and orthopedic rehabilitation
