Responsibilities

A. Visit jail facilities twice a week and 20 to 24 hours weekly. In addition, Provider must be able to see 30 to 32 patients weekly.

B. After initial mental health status has been completed by jail health staff, contracted will evaluate the mental health of inmates who are suspect of having behavior indicative of mental illness.

C. Evaluation and treatment of alcohol and drug abusers.

D. Evaluate inmates (victim and offender) after sexual assaults that occurred in jail facilities.

E. Evaluate inmate’s mental ability prior to segregation status and report to Medical Director and Sheriff. F. Establish policy and procedures for care of inmates with “special mental health needs”.

G. Develop individual treatment plans for inmates with special mental health needs, with alcohol or drug abuse history, with history of suicide attempts, or other psychological issues that are determined to be in need of individual care or crises intervention.

H. Must follow County Sheriff’s Department Medication Formulary.

I. Train jail staff and jail health staff on verbal and non-verbal cures of suicide attempts.

J. Submit monthly reports to health administrator to include, but not be limited to, the following: • number of patients referred for evaluation • number of patients requiring further evaluation • types of evaluations performed • number of treatment plans (and specific issues) • number of patients evaluated for sexual assault • number of suicide attempts; number of inmates who attempted suicide who are under mental health care.


Qualifications of Provider

Mental Health Provider:

1. advanced degree in psychology or social work (with certification for counseling and crises intervention), or MD/DO in psychiatry
2. licensed or certified to practice by State of Texas Board of Psychologists
3. experience working with incarcerated clients
4. maintain liability insurance
5. have backup coverage
6. twenty-four (24) hour coverage via beeper
7. Jail experience preferred
