Position Overview

The Rural Health Hub (RHH) is seeking a Tele-Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist to provide high-quality specialty care to children and adolescents with hematologic and oncologic conditions in rural and medically underserved Texas communities.

This flexible, part-time role allows the pediatric hematologist/oncologist to work remotely while trained clinical staff are physically present with the patient. The physician will evaluate and manage a broad range of pediatric blood disorders, support ongoing oncology care and survivorship, and collaborate with families, local primary care providers, hospitals, laboratories, infusion centers, and regional pediatric specialty teams.

The Rural Health Hub Model

RHH uses a hybrid-telehealth model that combines remote specialty expertise with in-person clinical support.

Local medical assistants, nurses, or advanced practice providers assist with:

• History, medications, vital signs, growth measurements, and symptom assessment

• Physical examination components

• Assessment for pallor, bruising, bleeding, lymphadenopathy, edema, and other relevant findings

• Connected examination technology when appropriate

• Coordination of CBCs, coagulation studies, chemistry panels, and other laboratory testing

• Coordination of imaging and other diagnostic studies

• Medication reconciliation and treatment monitoring

• Referrals, follow-up care, and communication with the local and regional care teams

This model allows pediatric hematologist/oncologists to provide meaningful ongoing specialty care while using local and regional resources for laboratory testing, imaging, transfusions, infusions, procedures, hospitalization, chemotherapy, and higher levels of care when needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct initial and follow-up pediatric hematology/oncology visits by telehealth

• Evaluate and manage common pediatric hematologic disorders

• Support longitudinal follow-up for pediatric oncology patients when appropriate

• Develop individualized diagnostic and treatment plans

• Review laboratory results, pathology, imaging, prior treatment records, and clinical progress

• Order appropriate diagnostic testing and referrals

• Provide medication and disease management

• Monitor patients with chronic hematologic conditions

• Participate in survivorship and post-treatment follow-up when appropriate

• Educate and collaborate with patients, parents, and caregivers

• Identify patients requiring urgent, procedural, or in-person evaluation

• Coordinate care with pediatricians, family physicians, hospitals, oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, genetic specialists, and other clinicians

• Complete timely documentation and clinical follow-up

Clinical Scope

Patients may include children and adolescents with:

• Iron deficiency anemia and other anemias

• Sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait counseling

• Thalassemia

• Hemolytic anemia

• Neutropenia

• Thrombocytopenia

• Immune thrombocytopenia

• Bleeding disorders

• Hemophilia

• Von Willebrand disease

• Thrombophilia and clotting disorders

• Venous thromboembolism

• Abnormal blood counts requiring specialty evaluation

• Lymphadenopathy

• Splenomegaly

• Bone marrow failure syndromes

• Benign hematologic disorders

• Leukemia and lymphoma follow-up in coordination with treating oncology centers

• Solid tumor follow-up and care coordination

• Treatment-related cytopenias or other complications

• Cancer survivorship and long-term follow-up

• Late effects of childhood cancer treatment

• Abnormal laboratory, pathology, or imaging findings requiring hematology/oncology evaluation

Patients requiring bone marrow biopsy, chemotherapy, transfusion, radiation therapy, surgery, stem cell transplantation, or other advanced oncologic treatment would be coordinated with appropriate regional pediatric hematology/oncology centers and hospital-based resources.

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree

• Board certified or board eligible in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

• Active Texas medical license or eligibility to obtain one

• Strong pediatric hematology and oncology diagnostic and management skills

• Ability to practice effectively through telehealth

• Strong communication skills with children, adolescents, and families

• Strong collaboration skills with local and tertiary care teams

• Commitment to rural and underserved populations

Experience in telemedicine, rural healthcare, sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders, benign hematology, cancer survivorship, or pediatric oncology follow-up is welcomed but not required.
