Pediatric Optometrist Job Requirements

• Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited program
• Active California optometry license
• Current American Heart Association BLS certification
• At least 1 year of clinical optometry experience
• Candidates without a pediatric optometry residency must have at least 3 years of pediatric optometry experience in a medical center setting
• Demonstrated pediatric eye care experience with strong proficiency in strabismus and binocular vision examinations
• Experience caring for complex pediatric populations, including patients with developmental, neurologic, cognitive, or behavioral differences
• Pediatric optometry residency is highly preferred and may be considered in place of the three-year pediatric experience requirement
• Ability to complete California healthcare credentialing requirements in a timely manner

Pediatric Optometry Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive optometric evaluations and ongoing eye care for primarily pediatric patients
• Perform pediatric strabismus, binocular vision, and visual function examinations
• Evaluate and manage routine and high-acuity pediatric optometry cases
• Conduct patient workups and develop appropriate treatment and follow-up plans
• Collaborate with ophthalmologists, optometrists, ophthalmic technicians, and other pediatric specialists
• Provide compassionate care for patients across a range of cognitive and developmental abilities, including many patients on the autism spectrum
• Coordinate care for patients with related conditions such as seizures, facial abnormalities, and other complex medical needs
• Perform contact lens fittings, including complex pediatric contact lens fittings when appropriate
• Use available diagnostic imaging equipment with support from ophthalmic technicians
• Document patient encounters, examinations, and care plans accurately in Epic
