Contract oncologists are needed at the Buffalo VA Medical Center, 3495 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14215, to provide on-site general oncology care for Veterans in the VA Western New York Healthcare System. The contract covers 1.67 FTE: a standing clinic schedule of three days per week plus after-hours on-call coverage for 17 weeks per year. Two physicians will share the coverage. The contract runs January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2027, with four one-year options through 2031.
Key Responsibilities

- Provide approximately 5 hours per week of inpatient oncology consult coverage.
- Evaluate, triage, and prioritize oncology consults from Primary Care and other services.
- Take histories, perform physical exams, order and interpret labs and testing, and plan and prescribe treatment, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy management.
- Cover on-call for 17 assigned weeks per year — all hours outside Monday–Friday 8:00 AM–4:00 PM (evenings, weekends, holidays). Answer calls from VA residents and physicians within 15 minutes and be on-site within 60 minutes when needed.
- Participate in tumor boards and conferences: weekly Oncology/Hematology conference, bi-weekly Surgical/Oncology conference, twice-monthly Lung Tumor Board, and Head & Neck Tumor Conference as needed.
- Document all care in the VA electronic health record, communicate test results per VHA Directive 1088, and provide discharge education coordinated with the next care setting.
- Take part in peer review, OPPE/FPPE, and quality improvement, and report patient safety events within 24 hours.
- Complete required VA training, including EHR, Suicide Risk Management, PACT Act Toxic Exposure Screening, Military Sexual Trauma, and privacy/HIPAA.
Qualifications & Experience
- MD or DO with current board certification in Medical Oncology from the American Board of Internal Medicine (required).
- Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or DC. No history of a license restricted, suspended, revoked, surrendered, or denied.

- Must not appear on the HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities.
- Proof of TB screening, MMR, varicella, Tdap, annual influenza vaccination, and Hepatitis B series.
- Fluent in spoken and written English.
- Inpatient and outpatient general oncology experience preferred. Prior VA or federal healthcare experience is a plus.
- Able to commit to a stable schedule. No changes to the assigned physicians are allowed during the first 90 days of the contract.
Compensation
- Clinic hours: $310–$340/hour, depending on experience and certifications.
- On-call coverage: $35/hour standby for scheduled on-call hours. On-site call-back time is paid at the clinic hourly rate.
- This position is local to the Buffalo area. No per diem or travel allowance is included.
- Malpractice coverage and VA credentialing costs are covered.
