Job description

Job description

A medical center in the Des Moines, Iowa area needs OB hospitalist coverage, with 48 open dates running from late December through the end of April.

Twenty-four hour in-house shifts, 7a to 7a. Call rooms are available. You will not be scheduled more than two 24-hour shifts back to back.

This is a working laborist role. The center delivers more than 2,900 babies a year and runs an 8-bed OB emergency department seeing roughly 1,389 visits annually, about 463 of which end in a delivery. You are the sole OB physician on site during your shift, covering unassigned deliveries, transfers, and anything emergent. VBACs and twins are in scope. No GYN responsibilities at all.

Maternal fetal medicine is on call. Residents and medical students are on site. The hospital partners with midwives from an affiliated practice who deliver here but do not hold delivery privileges, so you handle those deliveries and the birth planning alongside them. This is also the base for the only maternity transport team in Iowa. Epic.

$3,168 per 24-hour shift. Flights, lodging, rental car and mileage are reimbursed within the facility’s caps.

Job Responsibilities

Manage labor and perform deliveries as the sole OB physician on site. Provide rapid evaluation and management of obstetric patients presenting to the OB emergency department, initiating care within 30 minutes. Manage high-acuity obstetric cases including VBAC and twin deliveries. Coordinate admissions, transfers and operative care with peer-to-peer communication. Deliver antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum care for unassigned and transfer patients. Serve as clinical lead during obstetric emergencies and rapid response events. Provide courtesy deliveries when the primary OB/GYN is unavailable. Consult on and deliver for higher-risk patients in partnership with affiliated midwives. Support residents and medical students. Document in Epic.

Qualifications

Board certified in OB/GYN. Truly board eligible candidates are accepted. Active Iowa license, an active IMLC letter of qualification, or willingness to apply for Iowa licensure for 2027 dates. Malpractice history with no more than two claims filed in the past five years and no single adverse settlement or judgment exceeding $250,000 in the past five years. An NPDB self-query pulled within the month is required at offer, or at name clear for candidates with malpractice history. Providers local to the Des Moines area are not eligible.

Working Hours

Twenty-four hour in-house shifts, 7a to 7a. No more than two consecutive 24-hour shifts. Open dates run December 21 through April 30, including the December 21 to 28 holiday block.
