OB Internist | San Diego, CA | 1099 role | 7 Shifts Per Month | 420-600K+
Job at a glance
Job description
A premier OBGYN group in gorgeous San Diego, CA is seeking experienced, board-certified or board-eligible OB/GYN Hospitalists (Laborists) to anchor the East County’s largest hospital and a three-time U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Maternity Care honoree. This is a true inpatient-only role: no clinic, no outpatient panel, no teaching requirement, and no home call—when your shift ends, you hand off and go home. With roughly 2,100 deliveries a year, an on-site NICU, and Epic EMR, you’ll practice full-scope hospital obstetrics with meaningful volume and the resources to manage complex cases with confidence. Full time is just 7 or more 24-hour shifts per month, built around the availability you submit, and pays roughly $420,000 to $600,000+ a year depending on how much you choose to work. It’s an opportunity to help build a stronger, locally led team—while living in one of the most desirable coastal regions in the country.
Professional Highlights
- True inpatient-only laborist role – no clinic, outpatient panel, patient panel to build, teaching requirement, or home call – when your shift ends, you hand off and go home with nothing waiting for you
- Nationally recognized maternity program – Hospital named to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals for Maternity Care list in 2022–23, 2024, and 2025 – practice in a high-demand unit with a reputation patients and colleagues trust
- East County’s largest hospital – 562 beds, an on-site NICU, and Epic EMR – the depth of resources to back you on high-risk and complex cases
- Meaningful clinical volume – approximately 2,100 deliveries per year (about 6 per day) and around 12 OB triage visits daily – keep your full-scope obstetric skills sharp every shift
- Full-scope hospital OB/GYN – labor management, vaginal, operative vaginal, and cesarean delivery, OB triage and EMTALA exams, ED consults, and urgent inpatient GYN surgery within privileges – use the full breadth of your training
- Flexible, physician-driven schedule – submit your monthly availability and EA Health builds the schedule around it, with the potential to keep recurring days each month – real control over your calendar and your life outside medicine
- Lean full-time commitment – 7+ 24-hour shifts per month (about 39 in-house hours per week on average), 7:30 a.m.–7:30 a.m.; 12-hour day and night shifts count as half a shift – more days off than on, every month
- Excellent Comp Package: flat, transparent rate with no wRVU targets or productivity formulas – predictable pay you can calculate before the month even starts
- Exceptional earning potential – approximately $420,000 - $600,000+ – scale your income to your goals simply by adding shifts
- Malpractice and credentialing fully paid – $1M/$3M professional liability with tail coverage, plus hospital credentialing fees – significant out-of-pocket costs covered from the start
- Anchor a program on the rise – two full-time openings on a 12-physician team, help shape a stronger, locally led laborist group with a real voice in its direction
- Option to work in Oceanside, too – a brand-new labor and delivery department opening in Oceanside, with split shifts available (about one hour apart; no NICU at opening) – add variety or a founding-physician role if it appeals to you
- Independent contractor (1099) agreement – flat per-shift pay with the freedom to structure your own benefits and retirement; a one-time relocation payment may be considered case by case for full-time candidates moving to San Diego – flexibility and financial control that suit an experienced physician
