We are seeking OB Hospitalist physicians to provide in-house 24/7 coverage for a high-volume labor & delivery unit managing high-risk obstetric patients.
The OB Hospitalist will work closely with Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists who are:
- In-house during the day
- On-call at night
This is a collaborative, team-based environment with strong specialty support and shared coverage with clinic OB providers.
⏰ Schedule & Shifts
- 24-hour in-house call: 7:00 AM – 7:00 AM
- Flexible option: 12-hour shifts available upon request
- Ongoing coverage need
- ASAP start preferred
👶 Clinical Environment
- Approximately 11–12 deliveries per day
- Level II nursery
- ~4,775 annual births (service area includes Bloomington/East Lake St. clinics)
- Coverage includes:
- High-risk OB patients (MFM service)
- Emergency obstetric cases
- Unassigned/undocumented OB patients
- Support for C-sections and OB procedures alongside other OB providers
🧠 Key Responsibilities
- Manage high-risk labor & delivery patients
- Respond to OB emergencies and inpatient OB consults
- Assist with operative deliveries (C-sections, procedures)
- Collaborate closely with MFM specialists and OB teams
- Provide coverage for unassigned OB patients
- Coordinate care using shared hospital OB workflows

It is essentially a labor-and-delivery hospitalist role with strong MFM collaboration, rather than outpatient clinic work.
Qualifications
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Obstetrics & Gynecology
Experience managing high-risk pregnancies
Trauma Level I or II hospital experience required
Strong inpatient labor & delivery experience
Comfortable with:
Emergency OB management
C-sections and OB procedures
Team-based hospitalist workflows
BLS certification required

Skills
Strong labor & delivery management experience
Ability to manage high-risk pregnancies
Competency in emergency obstetrics, including:
Postpartum hemorrhage
Shoulder dystocia
Fetal distress
Eclampsia / preeclampsia management
Skilled in C-sections and assisting in operative deliveries
Experience with inpatient OB hospitalist care (not outpatient clinic-focused)
🚨 Trauma & Acute Care Experience
Trauma Level I or II hospital experience (required)
Comfort managing unstable obstetric emergencies
Rapid decision-making in high-acuity settings
Ability to stabilize and manage critical patients until escalation if needed
🤰 High-Risk Pregnancy Management
Familiarity with Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) collaboration
Ability to co-manage:
Preterm labor
Multiple gestations
Placenta previa/accreta concerns
Severe maternal comorbidities (HTN, diabetes, etc.)
Understanding of risk stratification and escalation protocols
🏥 Hospital-Based OB Hospitalist Skills
Experience working in-house 24/7 OB coverage models
Comfort covering:
Unassigned/“undoctored” OB patients
Emergency OB consults
Supporting other OB providers on the unit
Ability to function in a team-based shared coverage environment
