Job description

Neuro Hospitalist — Position Overview

Hiring need

  • Immediate recruiting target is 1 Neuro Hospitalist.
  • If two physicians could start within ~6 months
  • Longer term, the goal is to build toward approximately 4 neurologists as the neurosciences program grows.

Schedule & Coverage

  • Schedule is 7 days on / 7 days off.
  • Expected annual commitment is approximately 26 weeks per year.
  • There is no formally allocated PTO for shift-based physicians.
  • Physicians can rearrange schedules among themselves to create 2–3 consecutive weeks off, but those shifts are made up elsewhere during the year.
  • Shifts are currently onsite 7PM-7AM until their remote Tele-Neuro/Telestroke service comes online in the coming year
  • Physicians may still need to be available for an emergent case after the handoff.
  • Kootenai recently implemented a nurse call center to triage calls and reduce unnecessary/non-urgent after-hours calls reaching specialists.

Daytime Support / APP Coverage

  • One APP had already started at the time of the discussion.
  • An offer was out to a second APP.
  • The longer-term plan is to continue expanding APP support as the neurology program grows.
  • Remote Telestroke/tele-neurology will be used at night because current volumes have increased and the hospital does not view the existing burden on a single neurologist as sustainable.
  • The overall model is intended to become scalable and sustainable, adding physicians and APP support rather than overloading individual neurologists.

Patient Volume

  • Approx. less than 10, but the volume is not yet concrete, can be more

Compensation

The compensation discussion included:

  • A working/market range of roughly $400k+
  • Administrative compensation: approximately 72 hours/year, discussed at an hourly rate.
  • ICP incentive: approximately 5% of total salary annually
  • Paid travel for onsite interview and house hunting costs.

Sign-On / Relocation / Student Loans (All negotiable)

  • Relocation
  • Student loan repayment
  • Sign-on bonus
  • Student-loan repayment

Ideal Candidate

The preferred profile discussed was:

  • Approximately 5–6 years post-training.
  • Experience at a similarly sized or larger healthcare organization would be ideal.
  • A relatively recent graduate with enough experience to step into the program and help it grow.
  • Someone capable of supporting larger strategic goal of developing its neurosciences service line, including neurology and neurosurgery.

Clinical Requirements

Confirmed:

  • EEG reading is NOT required.
