We are seeking an experienced Neonatologist for an ongoing locum opportunity in Belleville, New Jersey, with an ASAP start and coverage anticipated through January 2027. This position provides coverage for a Level II Special Care Nursery/NICU and well-baby nursery, including delivery attendance, neonatal resuscitation, stabilization, and transfer support. Providers located in the tri-state area who can assist with urgent coverage needs are strongly preferred.

Assignment Details

  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Strong preference for tri-state-area providers who can assist with emergency coverage needs

Schedule

  • Coverage needed 7 days per week
  • 12-hour shifts available
  • Day Shift: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM
  • Night Shift: 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
  • Schedule may include day, night, and 24-hour shifts
  • Weekday and weekend coverage
  • No call

Practice Setting

  • Level II Special Care Nursery / NICU
  • Well-baby nursery
  • Hospital-based Neonatology
  • Pediatric/neonatal patient population
  • Epic EMR
  • No telehealth
  • No trauma designation

Patient Volume

  • Approximately 10–12 patients
  • Average well-baby nursery census: approximately 5
  • Approximately 5 deliveries per day

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide Neonatology coverage for the Level II Special Care Nursery/NICU
  • Cover the well-baby nursery
  • Attend all Cesarean section deliveries
  • Attend high-risk vaginal deliveries
  • Attend additional deliveries when requested by OB
  • Perform neonatal resuscitation
  • Evaluate newborns with clinical concerns
  • Provide overnight newborn evaluations and rounds when working nights
  • Stabilize newborns requiring a higher level of care
  • Coordinate and assist with neonatal transfers when necessary
  • May accompany neonatal transport/pickup when required

Clinical Support

  • Neonatology support available by phone
  • L&D staff trained in neonatal resuscitation
  • Respiratory Therapist available in the hospital
  • Additional Neonatology backup located approximately 30 minutes away
  • Backup may be able to respond onsite for anticipated high-risk deliveries when adequate notice is provided

Transfer Coverage

  • Newborns requiring advanced care are transferred to a higher-level facility
  • Respiratory Therapy support available for emergencies
  • Neonatology backup available
  • Physician may participate in neonatal transport when necessary

Requirements

  • MD or DO
  • Neonatology experience required
  • Must be comfortable managing a Level II Special Care Nursery/NICU
  • Must be comfortable performing neonatal resuscitation
  • Must be comfortable attending C-sections and high-risk deliveries
  • Must be capable of independently evaluating and stabilizing newborns requiring transfer to a higher level of care
  • Must be comfortable functioning with significant clinical independence

Ideal Candidate

An experienced Neonatologist comfortable providing independent coverage in a Level II Special Care Nursery/NICU and well-baby nursery, including neonatal resuscitation, high-risk delivery attendance, stabilization, and transfers. Physicians who live in New Jersey or the surrounding tri-state area and can provide flexible day, night, weekend, or urgent coverage are especially desirable.
