Job description

Provides medical services to the patients of AltaMed. Delivers care and services aligned with AltaMed’s Team-Based Care Model focused on population health, evidence-based medicine, appropriate resource use, and integrated delivery of care.


Minimum Requirements

  • Experience and training as a physician are required.

  • Valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of California and Board certification in the chosen specialty required or Board Eligible, with the expectation to become board certified within 18 months of employment.

  • Education, training, and experience are necessary to meet the underwritten requirements for inclusion under AltaMed’s malpractice insurance coverage.

  • Maintains competencies, remains current in practice requirements.

  • Maintains valid board license and DEA credentials.

  • Previous experience with computer-based systems is required; Electronic Medical Records experience is preferred. 

  • Leadership and/or management skills preferred.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish/Mandarin/Cantonese, depending on location, preferred. 

  • A minimum requirement of a valid BLS certification or higher, following the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross guidelines.

    Physical Requirements

    • While performing the duties of this job, the physician is regularly required to speak and hear.

    • The physician frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell.

    • The physician must be able to execute the physical requirements of treating patients, occasionally lift and/or move up to ten pounds.

    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    Environmental Conditions Critical to Performance

    • Work is in an office environment, climate-controlled through central air conditioning.

    • Low risk for contamination when adhering to Universal precautions, related to the performance of treatments.


    Essential Job Functions

    • Performs thorough medical history and physical, and timely completion of detailed and accurate documentation of assessment, including updated problem lists and care plans for each patient encounter. 

    • Completes orders or performs various tests, analyses, and diagnostic procedures as required and recommended by an evidence-based practice. 

    • Documents gather information in medical records as required by policies and analyze reports, findings of tests, and examinations.

    • Acts timely and appropriately on the results of tests, analyses, and diagnostic procedures. 

    • Administers or prescribes appropriate treatments and medications. 

    • Practices age-appropriate preventive care, including vaccinations, screenings, and recommendations on lifestyle, diet, exercise, etc. 

    • Follows the quality (HEDIS) requirements in health management of each patient, with emphasis on performing cervical cancer screening, mammogram screening, chlamydia screening, immunizations, colon cancer screening, and other health metrics, as applicable. 

    • Appropriately refers patients to a medical specialist or other practitioner for specialized treatment as needed, or is outside the scope of the physician’s practice. 

    • Reports births, deaths, and outbreaks of contagious diseases to governmental agencies. 

    • Conducts physical examinations to provide information needed for admission to school, consideration for jobs, or eligibility for insurance coverage. 

    • Provides continuity of care for patients requiring hospitalization, including admitting and providing primary care for jobs, or eligibility for insurance coverage.

    • Participates in the Quality Management Program, Utilization Reviews, Peer Reviews, AltaMed Medical Provider activities, and AltaMed’s On-call schedule, if applicable.

    • Supervises, teaches, and assists advanced-level practitioners (PAs, NPs, RNPs, Midwives) and other learners, as applicable. 

    • Performs minor surgery as applicable.

    • Performs other duties as assigned.
