Job Description

Last Update: 4/19/24

To our prospective teammates,

We are the medical director and assistant medical director for Sound’s hospital medicine practice at Via Christi St. Joseph’s in Wichita, Kansas. We’ve been a part of Sound for eight years and welcome interest from physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) coming out of training or looking to make a career change. We’d like to share more about who we are and what we do — specifically about our people, practice, and purpose — as you consider your options:

People

  • We’re a closely-knit, established team of ten physicians.
  • Our team comprises clinicians from a wide range of experience and diverse backgrounds who collaborate well together and enjoy spending time together, both inside and outside of work.
  • Our day-to-day culture includes a team atmosphere in our large team office with a multidiscipline model of patient care. We work hard to take care of patients while truly enjoying the team.
  • We want to keep the team involved and hear their opinions and voice when making changes within the team. We value strong work ethic and honesty, and patient safety always comes first.
  • Many of us are active on hospital committees, including the medical executive committee, which helps solidify our relationships with specialists and our very supportive administration. Clinicians can champion specific projects that help improve care, such as working to update current order sets.
  • We’re proud to offer J1-visa sponsorship through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Conrad 30.

Practice

  • We are a community-based hospital with multispecialty support. We see a wide variety of diseases while still having specialists readily available. We can take care of patients from small rural hospitals that need a higher level of care, so they are transferred to us.
  • The hospital is an open ICU with Intensivist support. We’re looking for internal medicine or family medicine board-certified/eligible physicians. ACLS/BLS certification is encouraged but not required.
  • We perform rounds, admissions, and discharges, as well as MDRs, and work with residents. All procedures are performed by the intensivist team.
  • Our schedule is week on/week off with a Tuesday switch day.
  • We work in Cerner with Dragon for dictation, with access to our own internal informatics platform.
  • Compensation ranges from $1388 (day) to $1518 (swing) to $1688 (night) per shift, with an anticipated base salary of $270,000 based on 182 shifts per year. Compensation for nocturnist is $1988 per shift, with an anticipated base salary of $360,000 based on 156 shifts per year. We also offer quality and productivity incentives.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and AD&D insurance, long- and short-term disability, 401k with match, paid medical malpractice and tail coverage, and annual CME allowance.
  • Our retention rate is high, and we work collaboratively within our team to ensure coverage for time off.

Purpose

  • We put patients first. Always.
  • We value and support growth and development in our hospital medicine practice, allowing you to explore new opportunities locally and within the broader medical group.
  • We’re a community-minded team and support involvement and contributions to community health and wellness in and out of the hospital.
  • Some of our clinicians’ volunteer time in low-income clinics in the community or through the university. We also take medical students and residents on our service to provide volunteer teaching.
  • Via Christi is a not-for-profit health system so there are many resources available for the uninsured, or the underinsured.
