The University of Missouri School of Medicine (SOM), Division of Hospital Medicine, seeks full-time academic Nocturnist Hospitalists to join our well-established program. Our rapidly growing hospitalist group provides inpatient support for a multi-hospital academic health system. We seek applicants who have exemplary clinical skills and a strong commitment to teaching.

Our Clinical Model

University Hospital offers the only Level I trauma center and helicopter service in central Missouri. Physicians throughout the state refer many of their most complicated cases to our flagship hospital. The 400+ bed hospital system specializes in treating the most severe illnesses and injuries. Our seven-story Critical Care Tower provides the latest in medical technology for critically ill or injured patients.

  • Responsibilities are:

    • Expected mix of teaching to clinical work

      • ~90% Clinical

      • ~10% Administration

    • Teaching

      • 75% of clinical assignments include teaching responsibilities

      • 7 of our 11 teams have learners with them

  • Proposed Schedule:

    • 26 weeks per year

    • Nocturnist Shifts: 7p-7a

    • Missouri Orthopaedic Institute

    • Rusk Rehabilitation Center

    • Columbia Post-Acute

Our Educational Model

The candidate will have opportunities to educate, mentor, and supervise our Internal Medicine Residents and Physician Assistant Fellows. Following a patient-based learning model, our hospitalists have the responsibility of teaching med students, residents, and fellows in various settings, all while providing effective patient-centered care.

We have a strong, long-standing ACGME-accredited Department of Medicine residency program which accepts 21 residents per year. Our residency program offers (6) one-year preliminary and (21) three-year categorical positions in Internal Medicine.

The Department of Internal Medicine also offers a unique, 12-month postgraduate Physician Assistant Fellowship in Hospital Medicine. Our fellowship program is designed equip our Physician Assistants with the confidence, knowledge, and training to thrive in our busy hospitalist service.

Our Research Model

Opportunities for research abound at the University of Missouri. Looking to the future, we have made a huge investment in medical research. The NextGen Precision Health Institute is a $220 million, 265,000-square-foot research facility that is a hub where scientists and clinicians collaborate with experts in other disciplines. The facility is equipped for every step of the translational research process and houses a MAGNETOM Terra 7 Tesla (7T) MRI scanner, the first of its kind in Missouri.

The Tiger Institute for Health Innovation is dedicated to improving patient care quality, lowering healthcare costs, and increasing access to healthcare for all Missourians. We provide opportunities to participate in industry funded research as well as NIH funded research within the University of Missouri.

Qualifications

  • MD/DO

  • Board-Certified/Board-Eligible in ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine

  • Commitment to providing quality medical education to residents and medical students

  • Ability to run rapid responses and codes

  • Commitment to quality improvement

  • All ranks available, commensurate with experience

Candidates will be evaluated on:

  • Commitment to working as a career academic hospitalist

  • Training/experience in point of care ultrasound (POCUS)

  • Bedside procedures

  • Training/Interest/Experience in Medical Informatics
