Position Overview

The Rural Health Hub (RHH) is seeking a Tele-Gastroenterologist to provide high-quality gastrointestinal care to patients in rural and medically underserved Texas communities.

This flexible, part-time role allows the gastroenterologist to work remotely while trained clinical staff are physically present with the patient. The gastroenterologist will evaluate and manage a broad range of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions, provide longitudinal specialty care, and collaborate with local primary care providers, hospitals, imaging teams, laboratories, and procedural specialists.

The Rural Health Hub Model

RHH uses a hybrid-telehealth model that combines remote specialty expertise with in-person clinical support.

Local medical assistants, nurses, or advanced practice providers assist with:

• History, medications, vital signs, and symptom assessment

• Abdominal and physical examination components

• Connected examination technology when appropriate

• Coordination of laboratory testing, imaging, stool studies, and other diagnostic testing

• Referrals for endoscopy, colonoscopy, procedures, and higher levels of care

• Follow-up care and communication with the local care team

This model allows gastroenterologists to provide meaningful ongoing care while using local and regional resources for diagnostics, procedures, and hospital-based services when needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct initial and follow-up gastroenterology visits by telehealth

• Evaluate and manage common gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions

• Develop individualized diagnostic and treatment plans

• Review laboratory results, imaging, pathology, endoscopy reports, and prior medical records

• Order appropriate diagnostic testing and referrals

• Provide longitudinal medication and disease management

• Identify patients requiring urgent, procedural, or in-person evaluation

• Coordinate care with local clinicians, hospitals, surgeons, and procedural specialists

• Complete timely documentation and clinical follow-up

Clinical Scope

Patients may include those with:

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

• Abdominal pain

• Irritable bowel syndrome

• Inflammatory bowel disease

• Chronic diarrhea or constipation

• Gastrointestinal bleeding

• Dysphagia

• Nausea and vomiting

• Liver disease and abnormal liver enzymes

• Fatty liver disease

• Cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis

• Pancreatic and biliary disorders

• Anemia requiring gastrointestinal evaluation

• Colorectal cancer screening and surveillance

• Post-hospital and post-procedure follow-up

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree

• Board certified or board eligible in Gastroenterology

• Active Texas medical license or eligibility to obtain one

• Strong gastrointestinal diagnostic and management skills

• Ability to practice effectively through telehealth

• Strong communication and collaboration skills

• Commitment to rural and underserved populations

Experience in telemedicine, rural healthcare, hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, motility disorders, advanced endoscopy, or other gastrointestinal subspecialty care is welcomed but not required.
