Family Medicine Physician – Rural Critical Access Hospital | Inpatient & Outpatient
A community-focused Critical Access Hospital in South Dakota is seeking a Family Medicine Physician to provide comprehensive care across outpatient, inpatient, and emergency settings.
This is an excellent opportunity for a physician who enjoys the variety, autonomy, and community impact of rural medicine and wants to develop meaningful long-term relationships with patients and families.
The medical center provides essential healthcare services to a rural population and offers a broad clinical environment that includes emergency care, outpatient primary care, acute inpatient services, diagnostic services, and coordinated specialty care.
The physician will care for patients across the lifespan, ranging from preventive and routine primary care to chronic disease management, acute illnesses, and inpatient medical care.
Job Responsibilities
Outpatient Family Medicine
Provide comprehensive family medicine to patients across the lifespan.
Conduct new-patient evaluations, follow-up visits, physical examinations, and wellness visits.
Diagnose and manage acute and chronic medical conditions.
Provide preventive care, screenings, counseling, and health education.
Develop individualized treatment plans.
Coordinate referrals and specialty care when appropriate.
Build long-term relationships with patients and families.
Inpatient & Hospital Care
Admit and manage patients requiring inpatient care.
Conduct daily rounds.
Evaluate and manage acute medical conditions.
Coordinate care with nursing, ancillary services, and consulting specialists.
Provide appropriate discharge planning and follow-up.
Maintain continuity between inpatient and outpatient care.
Emergency & On-Call Coverage
Support emergency services as part of the medical center's clinical team.
Participate in the physician on-call rotation.
Evaluate and manage acute patient presentations.
Collaborate with emergency, nursing, ambulance, and other clinical personnel.
Collaboration & Quality
Work closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and ancillary healthcare professionals.
Maintain accurate and compliant medical records.
Participate in quality improvement and patient-safety initiatives.
Contribute to community health education and outreach.
Support the organization's commitment to accessible rural healthcare.
Qualifications
MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
Completion of an accredited Family Medicine residency.
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Family Medicine.
Current or eligible South Dakota medical license.
Current or eligible DEA registration.
Strong clinical skills across preventive, acute, and chronic care.
Ability to provide both inpatient and outpatient care.
Willingness to participate in physician on-call rotation.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.
Ability to work effectively with physicians, APPs, nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff.
Preferred
Prior rural medicine experience.
Critical Access Hospital experience.
Community-based practice experience.
Experience providing both hospital and outpatient Family Medicine.
Experience working in an environment requiring broad clinical skills and physician autonomy.
