Chief Medical Officer (CMO) – Family Medicine Leadership Opportunity | Northern California

A mission-driven healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide executive clinical leadership, provider oversight, and strategic direction for its medical services.

This unique opportunity combines executive leadership responsibilities with direct patient care, allowing the successful candidate to influence clinical excellence, quality improvement initiatives, provider development, and organizational growth while maintaining a family medicine practice.

The CMO will partner with executive leadership, medical providers, and organizational teams to ensure high-quality, culturally responsive, patient-centered healthcare delivery.

Job Responsibilities

Leadership Responsibilities:
Provide executive clinical leadership and medical expertise to organizational leadership
Develop and implement clinical strategies, policies, and quality initiatives
Establish provider performance expectations and clinical standards
Support physician and advanced practice provider recruitment, onboarding, and retention
Provide clinical oversight, mentorship, and guidance to medical providers
Participate in leadership meetings, committees, and strategic planning initiatives
Monitor quality metrics, productivity goals, and regulatory compliance
Promote a culture focused on patient safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
Clinical Responsibilities:
Maintain an outpatient family medicine practice
Provide comprehensive primary care services for patients of all ages
Evaluate, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions
Develop individualized treatment plans
Order and interpret diagnostic testing
Prescribe medications within scope of practice
Perform office-based procedures consistent with training and privileges
Coordinate care with specialists and healthcare partners
Maintain accurate medical documentation

Qualifications

MD or DO from an accredited medical school
Active, unrestricted medical license (California or another U.S. state)
Minimum 5 years of outpatient clinical experience
Minimum 2 years of clinical leadership and/or administrative experience
Experience leading physicians and advanced practice providers
Strong knowledge of healthcare operations, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance
Excellent communication, leadership, and relationship-building skills
Commitment to community-focused and culturally responsive healthcare
