Job Title: Physician – Region 1
Location: Lima, OH 45802
Shift: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday–Friday (no nights or weekends)
Duration: Minimum 6 months (may be extended based on need and mutual fit)
Hours/Week: 40
Education: Doctoral Degree (MD or DO required)
Job Summary
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) is seeking a board-eligible or board-certified physician in internal medicine, family medicine, or emergency medicine. The physician will provide on-site primary care and hospital medicine services to a male incarcerated population, including specialty populations such as individuals with dementia or developmental disabilities.
This is a full-time position sharing duties with multiple nurse practitioners. On-call coverage is not required. Selected physicians will see approximately 2.5 patients per hour. Both a phone interview and an on-site meeting/tour are required.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide routine and emergency medical care to inmates, including:
o Examining, diagnosing, and treating patients
o Monitoring patient progress
o Administering vaccinations and medications
o Performing minor procedures as needed
o Conducting routine physical exams to assess medical fitness or suitability
• Collaborate with intra- and interdepartmental staff to administer treatment according to nationally recognized standards and document care in an electronic health record (EHR) system.
• Conduct medical evaluations, write reports, admission/discharge/death summaries, and maintain detailed patient progress notes.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests, manage medications, and make referrals for specialized care.
• Ensure all duties comply with scope of practice, ODRC policies, procedures, protocols, and American Correctional Association standards.
• Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities, including peer reviews.
• Consult with other healthcare professionals (e.g., social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists) and provide guidance to nursing and para-professional staff.
Required Qualifications
• License: Ohio Medical License
• Board-eligible or board-certified in internal medicine, family medicine, or emergency medicine
• Experience in primary care or hospital medicine
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medicine, and psychology
• Skill in administering treatments and medications
• Ability to handle sensitive contacts and interpret complex medical information
