Position: Department Chair – Emergency Medicine
Location: Northern New Jersey
Total Compensation: $575,000–$625,000
Start Date: As soon as credentialed (approximately 3–4 months for hospital privileges)
Position Overview
An established, high-volume hospital in Northern New Jersey is seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine Department Chair to lead its Emergency Department and Pediatric Emergency Department. This leadership opportunity is ideal for a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician with extensive ED director and academic leadership experience.
The Chair will oversee clinical operations, academic programs, residency and fellowship training, and departmental strategy while collaborating closely with hospital leadership and the C-suite.
Requirements
- Board Certified in Emergency Medicine (ABEM or AOBEM).
- Emergency Medicine residency trained.
- New Jersey medical license required (must obtain, if not currently licensed).
- Minimum of 15 years of Emergency Department Director and academic Emergency Medicine experience.
- Proven leadership experience in clinical operations, academic programs, and departmental management.
- Ability to start as soon as hospital credentialing and privileges are completed.
Schedule
- 48–72 clinical hours per month.
- Remaining time dedicated to administrative and leadership responsibilities.
- Approximately 3–4 months for hospital credentialing and privileges.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the entire Emergency Department and Pediatric Emergency Department.
- Direct clinical operations, departmental strategy, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Oversee Emergency Medicine residency and fellowship programs.
- Collaborate with hospital administration, the C-suite, and other clinical departments.
- Drive patient throughput, quality improvement, and operational efficiency.
- Support faculty development, academic initiatives, and resident education.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performing clinical environment.
Hospital Overview
- 750+ bed, nonprofit, acute care hospital.
- Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center.
- Annual Emergency Department volume of approximately 110,000–112,000 visits.
- More than 100 ED beds and treatment areas.
- Established, ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency program.
- Modernized and expanded Emergency Department with advanced technology and specialized treatment areas.
- Comprehensive stroke services, intensive care, pediatric services, and specialty surgical care.
- Epic EMR.
- Strong APP, physician, nursing, radiology, laboratory, and imaging support.
- Medical school affiliation and established academic programs.
- Recognized for patient safety, quality, and clinical excellence.
Department Details
- Approximately 75 physicians (full-time, part-time, and PRN).
- Approximately 46 APPs.
- APPs work alongside attending physicians and residents, with additional observation unit coverage.
- Established physician leadership and strong integration with hospital administration.
- Focus on clinical excellence, patient throughput, and operational performance.
Compensation & Benefits
- Total compensation: $575,000–$625,000.
- Administrative compensation provided through a stipend.
- Start-date bonus available, paid upon commencement.
- Start-date bonus subject to a 24-month clawback period.
