Emergency Medicine Physician Locum Opportunity – MA

We are seeking an ABEM Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician for a locum opportunity in North Adams, Massachusetts, beginning December 2026. This position offers a variety of 12-hour shifts in a Critical Access Hospital with strong APP, Hospitalist, EMS, and tertiary transfer support.

Assignment Details

• Start Date: December 14, 2026
• End Date: June 14, 2027

Schedule

• Mix of day, evening, and night coverage
• Standard physician shifts include:
  • 7:00 AM–7:00 PM
  • 12:00 PM–12:00 AM
  • 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
• Highest need: 8-hour overnight shifts from 11:00 PM–7:00 AM
  
• Minimal call obligations
• No telehealth
  

Practice Setting

• Emergency Medicine
• 18-bed Critical Access Hospital
• 14-bed Emergency Department
• Level III Trauma designation listed
• Approximately 18,000 annual ED visits
• Mix of high- and low-acuity patients
• Approximately 20% of ED patients are admitted or transferred

Patient Volume

• Approximately 18,000 ED visits annually
• Average of approximately 49 ED visits per day

Support Staff

• 12 hours of APP coverage daily
• Single-physician coverage primarily limited to overnight hours
• Hospitalist support available 24/7
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
• SANE-trained nursing staff with TeleSANE support
• Strong EMS and transfer support

Clinical Resources

• CT and X-ray available 24/7
• Ultrasound available Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM
• MRI available approximately 8 hours/day, 7 days/week
• In-house Anesthesia Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM
• General Surgery coverage for basic cases 4 days/week

Specialty & Transfer Support

• Acute stroke teleneurology support
• Real-time STEMI consultation
• Tele-crisis support for psychiatric patients
• Priority EMS transfer process for critically ill patients
• Established tertiary-care transfer relationships

Clinical Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive Emergency Medicine coverage
• Evaluate and manage high- and low-acuity ED patients
• Stabilize critically ill patients
• Coordinate transfers when a higher level of care is required
• Manage acute stroke, STEMI, psychiatric, trauma, and general Emergency Medicine presentations
• Collaborate with APPs, Hospitalists, consultants, EMS, and transfer centers

Requirements

• MD or DO
• ABEM Board Certification required
• Active Massachusetts medical license required
• Fellowship not required
• Prior locum/travel experience not required

Ideal Candidate

An ABEM Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician with an active Massachusetts license who is comfortable practicing in a Critical Access Hospital and managing a broad range of emergency presentations. The physician should be comfortable stabilizing higher-acuity patients for transfer while utilizing the site's APP, Hospitalist, specialty consultation, EMS, and tertiary-care support resources.
