EMS Associate Medical Director

Position Overview

Key Responsibilities

• Clinical Guidance & Policy Oversight: Collaborate with the Medical Director to establish prehospital clinical guidelines, evaluate standard operating procedures, and oversee educational curricula for Paramedics, EMTs, and Advanced Providers.
  
  
• Quality Improvement & Data Analytics: Drive system-wide QI programs across field operations, Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), and Mobile Integrated Health (MIH). Analyze patient care data to identify performance trends and optimize emergency response strategies.
  
  
• Specialized Operations Support: Serve as Medical Team Manager/Director for Urban Search & Rescue (US&R), and provide expert clinical consultation for Specialized Teams (e.g., Hazardous Materials, Helicopter EMS, Disaster Medical Assistance, and Marine Rescue).
  
  
• Clinical Audits & Case Reviews: Conduct regular incident and call reviews with educators, field providers, and supervisory staff; evaluate patient care documentation; and investigate adverse outcomes or care delivery complaints.
  
  
• Inter-Agency Liaison: Represent the department on regional medical advisory boards, committee meetings, base hospital panels, and local EMS agency oversight groups.
  
  
• Occupational Health & Pharmaceuticals: Assist leadership with risk management, post-exposure prophylaxis, and occupational safety. Act as the ordering physician of record for controlled substances and pharmaceuticals in the Medical Director's absence.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

• Degree: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from an accredited institution.
  
  
• Training:
  
  
  • Successful completion of an accredited Emergency Medicine Residency program.
    
    
  • Successful completion of an EMS Fellowship program.
    
    
• Clinical Practice: Active and ongoing engagement in the clinical practice of emergency medicine.
  
  
• Licensure & Certifications:
  
  
  • Active, unrestricted State Physician and Surgeon License.
    
    
  • Active, unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
    
    
  • Active, valid Driver’s License.
    
    
• Board Status: Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine, as well as the Emergency Medical Services subspecialty.
  
  
• Regulatory: Meets all local EMS agency requirements for prehospital agency medical direction.
  
  

Highly Desirable Qualifications

• Master of Public Health (MPH) or equivalent advanced degree.
  
  
• Prior experience providing EMS medical direction or direct leadership within a public safety/EMS provider agency.
  
  
• Board certification or formalized training in Medical Education and Simulation.
