Looking for an Emergency Medicine assignment where you can focus on quality patient care without the relentless volume of a major metropolitan ER?
We are seeking an experienced Emergency Medicine Physician for coverage at a low-volume Level III Trauma Center averaging approximately 11,000 ER visits annually. This opportunity offers a manageable patient census, straightforward 12-hour shifts, Epic EMR, and strong hospital-based support.
The ER operates primarily with single physician coverage, with shift overlap built into the schedule to help ensure smooth handoffs and allow the day physician to finish on time. A hospitalist is on site, General Surgery is available for trauma support, and the facility has an on-site helipad for patients requiring higher levels of care.
This facility offers an excellent support structure for a lower-volume Emergency Department:
- Approximately 11,000 annual ER visits
- Level III Trauma Center
- Epic EMR
- Hospitalist on site
- General Surgery available for trauma
- Cath Lab available during regular business hours
- Helipad located on site for emergency transfers
- Medical Director available for clinical discussion and questions
Job Responsibilities
Manage a broad range of acute illnesses, injuries, and emergency medical conditions.
Provide initial assessment and stabilization of trauma patients presenting to the Level III Trauma Center.
Determine appropriate patient disposition, including discharge, hospital admission, observation, consultation, or transfer.
Coordinate admissions and inpatient care with the on-site hospitalist.
Collaborate with General Surgery when trauma or surgical consultation is required.
Initiate transfers to higher levels of care when clinically appropriate.
Perform emergency procedures within the physician's scope of practice and hospital privileges.
Order and interpret appropriate laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic studies.
Provide appropriate consultation and specialty referrals.
Complete accurate and timely documentation using Epic EMR.
Participate in efficient physician-to-physician handoffs during shift overlap.
Communicate effectively with nursing, hospitalists, consultants, EMS, patients, and families.
Qualifications
Appropriate Emergency Medicine experience
Ability to independently manage a single-coverage Emergency Department
Current unrestricted medical license as required by the facility
DEA registration as required
Board Certification/Board Eligibility as required by facility bylaws
Current life-support and trauma certifications as required by the facility and credentialing department
Must meet all hospital credentialing and privileging requirements
Working Hours
Day Shift: 6:30 AM – 6:30 PM
Night Shift: 6:00 PM – 6:30 AM
30-minute physician overlap between day and night coverage
Primarily single-coverage Emergency Department
Overlap helps facilitate handoff and timely departure for the day physician
Skills
Ability to work confidently and independently in a single-coverage ER environment.
Trauma assessment and stabilization experience.
Strong procedural and resuscitation skills.
Ability to recognize when patients require specialty consultation or transfer to a higher level of care.
Comfortable managing both routine emergency presentations and higher-acuity cases.
Strong communication and patient-care skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with hospitalists, surgeons, nursing, EMS, and other clinical staff.
Epic experience preferred.
