Job description
We are seeking a Locum Tenens Emergency Medicine Physician for ongoing coverage at a low-volume Iowa emergency department. This is an excellent opportunity for a physician who enjoys the autonomy of a smaller ER, manageable patient volume, and the ability to consolidate work into 24-hour or extended block shifts.
The facility sees approximately 5,000 ER visits annually and offers flexibility in scheduling for physicians who can provide consistent coverage.
Position Highlights:
- Annual ER Volume: Approximately 5,000 visits

- Scheduling: Flexible based on provider availability and facility needs
- Patient Transfers: Higher-acuity patients requiring specialty services are typically transferred
- Inpatient Support: APP hospitalists and telehospitalist coverage available for inpatient admissions
- Credentialing: Approximately 2–3 months
- Temporary Privileges: Available for qualified candidates

Job Responsibilities
Evaluate, diagnose, stabilize, and treat emergency patients across a broad range of acuity levels.
Perform appropriate emergency examinations, diagnostic evaluations, and procedures within scope of practice.
Order and interpret laboratory testing, imaging, and other diagnostic studies.
Develop and implement appropriate treatment and disposition plans.
Determine whether patients can be safely discharged, require inpatient admission, or need transfer to a higher level of care.
Coordinate transfers for patients requiring specialty services or advanced care not available onsite.
Collaborate with APP hospitalists and telehospitalists regarding patients requiring inpatient admission.
Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and provide stabilization prior to transfer when necessary.
Prescribe medications and provide discharge instructions, follow-up recommendations, and patient education.
Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation using Epic EMR.
Communicate effectively with nursing, EMS, hospitalists, ancillary staff, and receiving facilities to ensure continuity of care.
Practice independently and confidently in a lower-volume emergency department with approximately 5,000 annual visits.
Follow all facility policies, emergency medicine standards, credentialing requirements, and applicable state and federal regulations.
Provide dependable scheduled coverage and communicate promptly regarding any scheduling or coverage changes.
Qualifications
Board Certified or Board Eligible
Physicians may be trained in:
Emergency Medicine
Family Medicine / Family Practice
Internal Medicine
Family Medicine and Internal Medicine physicians must have appropriate Emergency Department experience
Ability to work independently in a lower-volume emergency department
Comfortable evaluating, stabilizing, treating, and determining appropriate disposition of emergency patients
Comfortable transferring patients requiring a higher level of care or specialty intervention
Ability to complete timely and accurate Epic documentation
Must successfully complete hospital credentialing and privileging requirements
Flexibility with scheduling strongly preferred
Certifications & Credentialing
Candidates should be prepared to provide all licenses, certifications, and documentation required for hospital credentialing.
Required/Expected:
Board Certified or Board Eligible in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine
Active and unrestricted physician license appropriate for practice in Iowa
DEA registration
Current emergency medicine certifications as required by the facility and medical staff bylaws
Clean and acceptable credentialing history
Ability to complete credentialing within approximately 2–3 months
Temporary privileges may be available, potentially allowing qualified providers to begin coverage sooner.
Working Hours
Primary coverage: 7:30 AM – 7:30 AM
24-hour shifts are the most common
36-hour shifts may be available
48-hour blocks may be available
12-hour shifts can be considered but are more difficult to accommodate
Current scheduling offers flexibility for physicians who can also be flexible with their availability

Skills
Experience managing a broad range of acute illnesses, injuries, and emergency conditions.
Strong clinical judgment and the ability to make timely decisions regarding treatment, admission, discharge, or transfer.
Comfortable practicing in a lower-volume Emergency Department with a high degree of physician autonomy.
Ability to recognize patients requiring a higher level of care and appropriately stabilize and coordinate transfer.
Proficiency in common Emergency Department procedures and stabilization techniques.
Strong assessment, diagnostic, and critical-thinking skills.
Ability to interpret laboratory results, imaging, EKGs, and other diagnostic studies.
Experience collaborating with APP hospitalists, telehospitalists, nursing staff, EMS, and receiving facilities.
Ability to efficiently manage multiple patients and appropriately prioritize care based on acuity.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and clinical staff.
Proficiency with Epic EMR and timely medical documentation.
Ability to remain calm and make sound clinical decisions during high-acuity or time-sensitive situations.
Dependable, adaptable, and comfortable with 24-hour and extended block scheduling.
Emergency Department experience required for Family Medicine and Internal Medicine physicians.
