To prospective emergency physicians,

I am the medical director for Sound’s emergency medicine (EM) practice at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Enid, Oklahoma. I take pride in being part of Sound’s emergency medicine practice and want to extend a warm welcome to physicians embarking on their careers or seeking a change. As you consider your next steps, I’d like to provide you with more information about our people, practice, and purpose:

People
  • We are a dedicated and compassionate team that values hard work and community engagement, fostering positive collaboration with various hospital staff members, including nurses, techs, and hospitalists.
  • We boast an excellent team of nurses, fostering a positive relationship with our hospitalist team. Our consulting staff is responsive, supportive, and readily available to assist when needed.
  • As the Medical Director, I am an advocate for our emergency room patients and our dedicated team of physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs), consistently prioritizing actions that align with the best interests of our patients and our medical professionals.
  • We foster a culture of mutual assistance within our team, and our hospitalist team and consultants are exceptional—always responsive, supportive, and wonderful to collaborate with.
  • Our team maintains a positive rapport with the nursing staff, fostering effective collaboration. Our shifts are 12 hours, complemented by an additional 12 hours of midlevel coverage.
Practice
  • Ideal candidates for this position demonstrate the ability to manage multiple high-acuity patients simultaneously. They excel as solo physicians, collaborate seamlessly with admitting and consulting physicians, communicate effectively, and exhibit strong teamwork with nurses and support staff.
  • We serve an appreciative patient population that values our exceptional care.
  • In this role within a single physician/part-time advanced practice provider (APP) setting, you’ll encounter distinctive challenges related to patient transfers, follow-up, and managing multiple high-acuity cases simultaneously. Despite these unique aspects, our workplace has ample resources and accessible subspecialty physicians for consultation, making the job more manageable. It’s important to note that while we benefit from these resources, we share similar challenges with many other rural sites.
  • Candidates for this position should be board-certified/eligible in family medicine (FM) or emergency medicine (EM). Physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) are welcome, with the requirement that NPs must possess ENP certification or have completed an emergency fellowship.
  • Our team actively engages in key committees focused on stroke, sepsis, and code blue situations. Additionally, we actively contribute to hospital medical staff performance improvement initiatives and participate in meetings of the medical executive committee.
Purpose
  • Our top priority is always the well-being of our patients.
  • A focus on growth and development is a key feature of Sound, where teammates can expand their careers here locally and within the broader medical group.
  • We’re a community-minded team and encourage our team members who want to contribute in and out of the hospital to help make our local community thrive.
