Job Description

Last Update: 4/26/24

To our prospective teammates,

I am the medical director for Sound Physicians’ practice at Carondelet St. Mary’s in Tucson, Arizona. I’ve proudly been a part of Sound for the past five years and extend a warm welcome to those who seek new opportunities or are embarking on a career change. Allow me to provide you with insights into our organization, focusing on our dedicated people, our clinical practice, and our unwavering purpose as you contemplate your next steps:

People
  • We’re a hardworking, close-knit team of 15 physicians and 6 advanced practice providers (APPs) who work and communicate well with each other.
  • We thrive on the diversity of our clinicians, hailing from diverse geographic, educational, and training backgrounds. We continuously learn from one another and approach patient care with fresh perspectives.
  • We want to keep the team involved and hear their opinions and voice when making changes within the team. We value strong work ethic and honesty, and patient safety always comes first.
  • Teamwork is at the heart of what we do. We are always ready to lend a helping hand – even during procedures and at shift change.
  • Many of us are active on hospital committees, including the medical executive committee, which helps solidify our relationships with specialists and our very supportive administration. Clinicians can champion specific projects that help improve care, such as working to update current order sets.
Practice
  • We are a level III trauma center with a 54-bed emergency department, seeing over 35,000-45,000 visits annually.
  • We’re looking for board-certified/eligible emergency medicine physicians.
  • Our advanced practice providers (APPs) see triage and fast-track patients. We work alongside Sound’s hospital medicine team for a smooth transition.
  • Currently, we work eight-hour shifts to allow for a good work-life balance. We’re always there to support each other when covering shifts.
  • We see high-acuity patients and admit over 20% of our patients.
  • We have access to all major specialists. We are a comprehensive cardiac center (CT surgery) and primary stroke center. We have a separate closed medical ICU & CVICU and a geropsych unit. We are an EMS-based hospital and AZ Department of Corrections unit.
  • There are teaching opportunities as we take medical students on our service.
  • Regular monthly meetings, both remote and in-person, foster engagement and provide a platform for feedback.
  • Expected annual salary is based on 120 hours per month. We offer 1099 and W2 options for the annual target pay of $355,014 – 498,187.
  • W2 employed physicians are eligible for benefits. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life and AD&D insurance, long- and short-term disability, 401k with match, paid medical malpractice and tail coverage, and annual CME allowance.
Purpose
  • Our top priority is always the well-being of our patients.
  • A focus on growth and development is a key feature of Sound, where teammates can expand their careers here locally and within the broader medical group.
  • We’re a community-minded team and encourage our team members who want to contribute in and out of the hospital to help make our local community thrive.
