Join a highly respected cardiovascular and thoracic surgery team with the Providence Cancer Institute supporting both inpatient and outpatient services. We are seeking a skilled Cardiovascular Surgery Physician Assistant to assist with clinic, OR, inpatient rounding, and shared call responsibilities. Thoracic surgery experience is preferred but not required.
Position Highlights
Full-time locum assignment (March 1, 2027 - August 31, 2027)
Inpatient and outpatient practice
Mix of clinic, operating room, and shared inpatient rounding
1:4 beeper call schedule
Guaranteed 40 hours per week
Multiple providers will be considered
Epic EMR
Travel and lodging provided
Job Responsibilities
Operating Room
First assist in cardiovascular and thoracic surgical procedures
Support surgeons during complex cardiothoracic cases
Vein harvesting using Maquet equipment
Open radial artery harvesting
Harmonic scalpel techniques
Assist with VATS and robotic thoracic procedures
Surgical Case Mix
60%-70% VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery)
30%-40% robotic thoracic surgery
Most surgical cases performed at Providence Portland Medical Center (PPMC)
Additional procedures performed at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (PSVMC) Minor Procedures Unit
Clinical & Inpatient Care
Post-operative patient management
Inpatient rounding
Clinic evaluations and follow-up care
Care coordination across multiple facilities
Collaboration with surgeons, APPs, nurses, and support staff
Patient triage and urgent clinical decision making
Qualifications
Certified Physician Assistant
Active Oregon PA License
Active DEA
BLS Certification
ACLS Certification
Cardiovascular and/or Thoracic Surgery experience
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Ability to travel between hospitals and clinic locations
Working Hours
Four 10-hour shifts per week
Typical hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Approximately:
2 days/week in clinic
2 days/week in the operating room
Shared inpatient rounding responsibilities with three existing APPs
Minimum of 10 call days per month, including at least one weekend call rotation monthly
Call Coverage
24-hour beeper call
1:4 call rotation
Approximately one weekday call shift per week
One weekend call rotation per month (Friday 7:00 AM - Monday 7:00 AM)
APPs handle incoming calls, triage patient concerns, and escalate to surgeons when necessary
Most call responsibilities are managed remotely by phone and do not require returning to the hospital
Skills
Thoracic surgery first assist experience
First Assist Certification
Vein harvesting experience
5+ years of recent Cardiovascular Surgery experience
Robotic surgery experience
VATS experience
