A leading healthcare system is seeking an experienced Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant to support its open-heart surgery program. The PA will work closely with cardiothoracic surgeons and multidisciplinary teams to provide high-quality perioperative and inpatient care. This role requires strong clinical expertise, leadership abilities, and experience assisting in complex cardiovascular procedures.
Job Responsibilities
• Assist cardiothoracic surgeons as First Assist in the operating room
• Perform vessel harvesting and other surgical procedures as needed
• Evaluate patients, obtain medical histories, and perform physical examinations
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests and medications
• Provide perioperative, inpatient, and postoperative patient care
• Collaborate with surgeons, physicians, and multidisciplinary care teams
• Maintain accurate documentation in the electronic medical record system
• Provide mentorship and clinical guidance to the PA team and healthcare staff
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs
Qualifications
• Recent OR experience required
• Experience as Cardiothoracic Surgery First Assist and vessel harvesting preferred
• Active New York State Physician Assistant License
• NCCPA Certification
• DEA Certification (Unrestricted)
• BLS & ACLS Certification
• NYS Infection Control Certificate (renewed every 4 years)
Working Hours
• 12.5 Hour Flex Day Shifts
• Rotating clinical schedule
• 2 → 2 Day shifts in a row
• 2N → 2 Night shifts in a row
• 3 → 3 Day shifts in a row
• 3N → 3 Night shifts in a row
• 4 → 4 shifts in a row (typically day shifts unless specified)
• 5 → 5 shifts in a row
So essentially, the schedule rotates, and the PA may be assigned 2–5 consecutive shifts, sometimes days and sometimes nights, depending on departmental staffing needs.
Since the job also states 12.5-hour shifts, the weekly hours could vary depending on the schedule.
For example:
• 3 shifts/week → ~37.5 hours
• 4 shifts/week → ~50 hours
