Pathology Assistant Job Requirements

• New York State license as required for the role
• Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related science
• Completion of a Pathologists’ Assistant program or equivalent education and training
• At least 1 year of relevant surgical pathology or laboratory experience required; 2 years preferred
• ASCP certification preferred
• Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association
• Flu vaccination required; exemptions and exceptions are not available for this assignment
• Strong attention to detail, organization, flexibility, adaptability, and stress tolerance
• Ability to safely use laboratory equipment, including grossing tables, cryostats, and handsaws
• Ability to remain stationary for extended periods and move throughout the pathology laboratory as needed

Surgical Pathology Responsibilities

• Assist with the preparation and gross examination of surgical pathology specimens under pathologist supervision
• Describe gross anatomic features, dissect specimens, and prepare tissue sections for microscopic examination
• Prepare frozen and permanent sections for light microscopy, including photographs when requested
• Accession, label, and verify surgical pathology specimens for accuracy and traceability
• Review clinical records, laboratory data, scans, and X-rays to obtain relevant case history
• Assist with gross specimen coding and coordinate workflow across grossing stations
• Prepare, stain, and coverslip samples selected for frozen section evaluation
• Prepare specimens for histology and select appropriate samples for decalcification
• Enter specimen information, block counts, and tissue details accurately into the laboratory information system
• Download or print cassettes through the LIS as needed
• Maintain and update voice-recognition templates and troubleshoot dictation-related issues
• Assist with postmortem examinations when required
• Monitor designated gross room supplies and support inventory activities
• Maintain clear communication with pathologists and histology laboratory staff
• Support updates to the Gross Room Manual and perform other related duties as assigned
