Job description

Job description

Michigan Head & Spine Institute is seeking a dedicated Physician Assistant to assist our Orthopaedic Surgeon in providing care for patients with spine conditions.

Specializing in the advanced diagnosis and treatment of back and neck conditions, our surgeon provides comprehensive care for herniated discs, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, and chronic spine pain.

Working collaboratively with the surgeon, the PA will participate in all aspects of patient care, from initial evaluation and treatment planning through surgical intervention and postoperative management.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a comprehensive clinical and surgical practice, providing exposure to both outpatient patient care and the operating room.

Job Responsibilities

• Evaluate and manage patients presenting with back and neck conditions
• Obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, and assess clinical findings
• Review and interpret diagnostic imaging, including X-rays, MRI, and CT studies, within the PA's scope of practice
• Develop and coordinate treatment plans in collaboration with the orthopaedic spine surgeon
• Order appropriate diagnostic studies, physical therapy, and other conservative treatment modalities
• Prescribe medications within authorized scope of practice
• Participate in preoperative evaluations and surgical planning
• Assist the surgeon in the operating room during spine procedures
• Provide postoperative patient care, including follow-up evaluations and monitoring recovery
• Coordinate patient care and communicate effectively with referring providers, hospital staff, and other healthcare professionals
• Educate patients regarding their diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, and recovery expectations

Qualifications

• Graduate of an ARC-PA-accredited physician assistant program
• Current Michigan Physician Assistant license
• Current Michigan controlled substance license/registration, as applicable
• Current American Heart Association BLS certification
• Orthopaedic experience preferred; spine surgery experience highly desirable
• Candidates with less experience or recent graduates will be considered if they demonstrate a strong interest in orthopaedic surgery and a commitment to developing surgical skills
• Strong clinical assessment, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work effectively in both outpatient clinical and operating room environments
