Job description

Physician Assistant – Medical Oncology / Clinical Research

Phase I Oncology | Outpatient | 4 × 10-Hour Days

Our Client is seeking an experienced Physician Assistant (PA) to join a leading academic cancer program as part of a specialized Phase I Clinical Research Oncology team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Medical Oncology PA who enjoys caring for cancer patients and wants to expand their expertise into cutting-edge clinical research and first-in-human therapies.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in medical oncology, chemotherapy and systemic cancer treatment. Previous clinical research experience is not required — the research team will provide training.

About the Position

This PA will provide direct patient care within a highly collaborative Phase I oncology clinical trials program, caring for patients enrolled in early-phase and first-in-human clinical trials involving solid tumors.

The role combines hands-on medical oncology care with clinical research, allowing the PA to follow patients throughout their treatment while working closely with oncology physicians and a dedicated research team.

This is a fully patient-facing clinical role with no laboratory or bench research responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and manage patients with solid-tumor malignancies participating in Phase I clinical trials
  • Provide ongoing medical oncology care, including assessment of treatment response and toxicities
  • Manage patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies and other systemic cancer treatments
  • Recognize and manage cancer-treatment-related side effects and complications
  • Conduct clinical trial study visits and patient assessments
  • Review laboratory results, imaging and other clinical data
  • Document patient encounters and clinical trial-related information
  • Assess and grade adverse events according to clinical trial protocols
  • Collaborate closely with the primary and secondary attending physicians
  • Work with clinical research coordinators, regulatory staff and other members of the research team
  • Participate in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary clinical research environment

What Makes This Opportunity Unique?

This position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of medical oncology and cutting-edge clinical research.

You will care for patients receiving innovative therapies that may not yet be widely available in standard oncology practice, including Phase I and first-in-human clinical trials.

You don't need to come in as a clinical research expert. The research component can be taught. What is essential is a solid understanding of medical oncology and systemic cancer treatment.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a Medical Oncology PA who:

  • Has hands-on experience caring for adult oncology patients
  • Is comfortable with chemotherapy and systemic cancer treatments
  • Understands common oncology treatment regimens and associated toxicities
  • Is comfortable assessing and managing treatment-related side effects
  • Is detail-oriented and comfortable caring for medically complex patients
  • Enjoys working collaboratively with physicians and research professionals
  • Has an interest in clinical research and emerging cancer therapies
  • Is eager to learn and grow within a specialized Phase I oncology program

Previous clinical research experience is a plus, but not required. Training will be provided.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • NCCPA certification
  • Eligible for PA licensure in New York
  • Prior Medical Oncology experience required
  • Experience managing patients receiving chemotherapy and/or systemic cancer therapy required
  • Clinical research experience preferred, but not required

Schedule & Setting

  • 4 days per week
  • 4 × 10-hour shifts
  • 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Outpatient cancer center setting
  • 1199 union position
  • Fully patient-facing clinical role
  • Low patient volume with highly complex patients due to clinical trial participation
