Nurse Practitioner – Intensivist
Position Summary
The Nurse Practitioner Intensivist provides advanced clinical care to critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Working collaboratively with intensivist physicians and the multidisciplinary critical care team, the NP manages complex medical conditions, performs procedures, and supports high-acuity patient care throughout the course of critical illness.
Key Responsibilities

Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including admission histories and physical examinations

Manage critically ill ICU patients under physician supervision and established protocols

Conduct daily ICU rounds and participate in multidisciplinary care planning

Develop, implement, and modify treatment plans for acute and complex conditions

Order, interpret, and document diagnostic tests, imaging, and laboratory studies

Manage ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring, sedation, and vasoactive medications

Perform bedside procedures within scope of practice (e.g., central and arterial line placement, intubation assistance, chest tube management)

Respond to clinical deterioration, emergencies, rapid response events, and code situations

Coordinate care with nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and consulting services

Communicate with patients and families regarding clinical status, treatment plans, and prognosis

Ensure accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record

Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and ICU protocols
Patient Population
-
Medical, surgical, and/or specialty ICU patients
-
Conditions may include respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, multi-organ failure, trauma, and post-operative critical illness
Schedule
-
Variable shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required
Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (Acute Care NP preferred)

Current national certification as a Nurse Practitioner

Active or eligible state licensure

BLS and ACLS certification required

Prior ICU, critical care, emergency medicine, or hospital medicine experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills

Ability to function effectively in high-acuity, fast-paced environments

Proficiency in critical care procedures and ICU management

Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
