Practice Setting: Inpatient Behavioral Health
Coverage Type: Temporary FMLA Coverage
Start Date: ASAP

Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified Psychiatric Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for an inpatient behavioral health assignment in Appleton, Wisconsin, to provide temporary coverage for a provider on FMLA leave. Candidates must hold an active Wisconsin license and be available to start as soon as possible.

The selected provider will deliver comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, medication management, follow-up care, and clinical support for an inpatient behavioral health population consisting of adults and pediatric patients ages 5 and older.

The APP will collaborate with psychiatrists, nursing staff, therapists, social workers, and other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team to support patient safety, stabilization, treatment planning, and continuity of care.

Only providers currently licensed in Wisconsin who can start ASAP will be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide psychiatric assessments, evaluations, and ongoing management of inpatient behavioral health patients.

  • Conduct psychiatric follow-up visits and evaluate newly admitted patients as assigned.

  • Develop, implement, and adjust individualized treatment plans based on clinical assessments and patient needs.

  • Manage psychiatric medications, including prescribing and monitoring treatment response within the provider's scope of practice.

  • Assess and manage acute psychiatric symptoms and behavioral health conditions.

  • Complete admission evaluations, discharge assessments, and discharge planning in collaboration with the treatment team.

  • Respond to urgent clinical evaluations and changes in patient condition.

  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, nursing staff, therapists, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning and care coordination.

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation in the electronic medical record.

  • Support safe, effective, and appropriate patient care throughout the assigned inpatient census.

  • Follow facility policies, clinical protocols, and applicable state and federal regulations.

Patient Population and Productivity Expectations

The APP will provide comprehensive clinical coverage for the assigned inpatient behavioral health census, including adult and pediatric patients ages 5 and older.

On a typical full-census day, the provider should be capable of managing approximately 8–12 patient encounters per day, which may include:

  • Psychiatric follow-up visits

  • New patient admissions and evaluations

  • Discharge assessments

  • Urgent clinical evaluations

  • Medication management and treatment-plan updates

The provider will also be responsible for completing required documentation and participating in interdisciplinary treatment planning.

Productivity expectations may vary based on patient acuity, admissions and discharges, clinical emergencies, staffing levels, and other patient-care responsibilities. Patient safety and quality of care will take precedence over encounter volume.

Required Qualifications

  • Current, active Wisconsin licensure appropriate to the provider's role.

  • National certification appropriate to the position, such as PMHNP certification or applicable PA certification.

  • Current DEA registration.

  • Ability to meet hospital credentialing and privileging requirements.

  • Ability to provide psychiatric care within the provider's scope of practice.

  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, documentation, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with an interdisciplinary inpatient treatment team.

  • BLS certification as required by facility policy.

  • Availability to begin the assignment ASAP.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous inpatient psychiatric or behavioral health experience.

  • Experience managing acute psychiatric and behavioral health conditions.

  • Experience with psychiatric medication management and treatment planning.

  • Experience caring for adult and pediatric behavioral health patients, including children ages 5 and older.

  • Familiarity with inpatient admissions, discharge planning, psychiatric follow-ups, and interdisciplinary care coordination.
