Job description

Liver Institute, PLLC | Tucson, Arizona
Position ID: 134643 | Full-Time | Onsite with Satellite Clinic Travel

Compensation: Approximately $135,971–$157,000+ annually, depending on experience and qualifications, plus travel bonuses, mileage reimbursement, and performance incentive eligibility.

Position Overview

NorTek Medical Staffing is recruiting an experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) for Liver Institute, PLLC, an established specialty practice dedicated to comprehensive liver care in Tucson, Arizona.

This opportunity offers a combination of outpatient hepatology care, specialty procedures, clinical research, and ongoing professional development. The ideal candidate will have a strong clinical foundation, sound judgment, excellent patient communication skills, and a commitment to taking ownership of patient care while developing specialized expertise in liver disease management.

Experienced NPs transitioning from general practice are welcome to be considered, with training and supervision tailored to their background and demonstrated competency. Candidates with gastroenterology, hepatology, or liver disease experience are especially encouraged to apply.

Please note: New graduate Nurse Practitioners are not currently being considered.

About the Practice

Established in 2015, Liver Institute, PLLC provides comprehensive evaluation and management of liver disease, including advanced liver disease, liver failure, fatty liver disease, and post-liver-transplant care.

The practice expanded into outpatient procedures in 2019 and established its clinical research department in 2022. Its Fatty Liver Clinic complements its broader specialty services.

Medical Director Dr. Shahid Habib is a transplant hepatologist with advanced training in hepatology and liver transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Compensation depends on clinical experience, specialty background, demonstrated competency, training needs, and agreed responsibilities.

General NP experience: Approximately $135,971 annually for candidates with around 2–3 years of general NP experience, with additional specialty learning and training required.

GI or hepatology experience: Approximately $157,000 annually or higher, depending on relevant experience and qualifications. Compensation may be negotiated.

Additional compensation includes:

  • $200 per assigned satellite clinic day.

  • Business mileage reimbursement at the applicable IRS rate.

  • Eligibility for an annual performance incentive.

The annual performance incentive is based on productivity measured by completed patient encounters, rather than the dollar amount or revenue generated by individual visits. Specific targets, eligibility requirements, and payment terms will be reviewed during the hiring process.

Job Responsibilities

The NP will manage an outpatient liver clinic schedule, with an expected volume of approximately 16–20 patients per day.

Responsibilities include:

Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including medical histories, physical examinations, and review of relevant medical records.

Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients within the NP's authorized scope of practice and demonstrated competency.

Review laboratory results and diagnostic studies to support clinical assessments and treatment planning.

Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans.

Provide follow-up care and recognize clinical changes requiring further evaluation or physician consultation.

Educate patients and families about diagnoses, medications, treatment adherence, lifestyle modifications, and ongoing disease management.

Learn and perform paracentesis and therapeutic phlebotomy following appropriate training, competency assessment, and applicable practice requirements.

Follow established clinical workflows and treatment protocols based on American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases guidelines.

Use standardized clinical note templates and maintain accurate, timely documentation.

Collaborate with the hepatology team and communicate appropriately with the supervising or consulting physician.

Support continuity of care across Tucson and assigned satellite clinics.

The position includes participation in clinical research as a subinvestigator, described by the practice as a sub-PI, in accordance with sponsor protocols and assigned responsibilities.

Responsibilities include:

Follow applicable study protocols and established research workflows.

Maintain thorough and accurate documentation for research participant appointments.

Coordinate with the physician and research team regarding assigned patient care and study activities.

Participate consistently in assigned clinical, research, educational, and operational responsibilities.

Benefits may include:

Professional Expectations

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliable attendance, professional boundaries, and ownership of assigned responsibilities.

The practice expects providers to deliver attentive patient care, complete documentation promptly, communicate effectively with colleagues, follow established protocols, and remain flexible regarding clinic assignments.

Candidates should be prepared to discuss their expectations for clinical and nonclinical work, scheduling limitations, professional development, and the conditions necessary for a successful long-term employment relationship.

Interview Process

Completion of the practice's Candidate Pre-Interview Questionnaire is required before a phone interview can be scheduled.

The questionnaire addresses:

Professional background and relevant disclosures concerning conduct, disciplinary actions, license restrictions, malpractice matters, or investigations.

Interest in the practice and goals for the next opportunity.

Compensation expectations.

Clinical and nonclinical responsibilities.

Active state licenses, Arizona licensure status, and DEA registration.

Schedule availability and ongoing commitments.

Independent learning, literature review, and educational participation.

Satellite clinic travel and geographic limitations.

An in-person interview in Tucson, Arizona, is required for candidates selected to proceed.

Qualifications

The practice provides one week of paid orientation covering clinical workflows, operational expectations, standardized documentation, clinical protocols, note requirements, assigned responsibilities, and communication processes.

Orientation pay is calculated hourly based on the candidate's agreed annual base salary.

Orientation is intended to familiarize the NP with the practice's systems and expectations. It does not replace the clinical foundation required of an experienced NP or constitute a residency or comprehensive specialty training program.

Providers without prior GI or hepatology experience must develop the specialty knowledge required for their responsibilities through ongoing learning, clinical guidance, and independent study. Training and supervision will be adjusted according to prior experience and demonstrated competency.

Mandatory educational sessions are held every Monday at 7:00 PM. Topics include liver disease, clinical management, research, and practice protocols. Session duration and participation arrangements will be reviewed during the hiring process.

Continue independent study outside scheduled clinical hours when needed.

Active DEA registration or eligibility to obtain it, as applicable to assigned responsibilities.

Prior NP clinical experience; approximately 2–3 years of general NP experience is a consideration pathway.

Gastroenterology, hepatology, or liver disease experience preferred.

Strong clinical assessment, chronic disease management, patient education, and communication skills.

Strong documentation skills, including readiness to document research participant visits.

Ability to work independently within individual competency while seeking appropriate physician consultation.

Willingness to follow standardized documentation, clinical protocols, and established workflows.

Availability for satellite clinic travel, assigned Saturday coverage, and mandatory Monday evening education.

Commitment to ongoing independent learning and professional development.

Ability to attend an in-person interview in Tucson, Arizona, if selected to proceed.

Working Hours

Regular working hours are 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, including a one-hour lunch break.

Expected coverage includes:

Approximately 3–4 satellite clinic days outside Tucson per week, depending on assigned locations and operational needs.

Two clinic days per week in Tucson.

Approximately twice-monthly Saturday clinic coverage in Tucson.

Mandatory Monday educational sessions at 7:00 PM.

The final weekly rotation, total workdays, Saturday arrangements, and allocation of Tucson and satellite coverage will be confirmed during the hiring process.

This is a full-time, onsite position requiring consistent availability, flexibility across clinic locations, and commitment to the complete clinical and educational schedule.

Regular travel to satellite clinics is an essential responsibility of this position.

Business mileage is reimbursed at the applicable IRS mileage rate.

A $200 travel bonus is paid for each assigned satellite clinic day, in addition to base compensation.

Overnight stays may be appropriate when a satellite assignment requires more than approximately two hours of driving each way.

The practice covers reasonable lodging expenses when approved.

Overnight arrangements must be communicated, approved, and scheduled in advance. Providers may not independently arrange overnight stays on an ad hoc basis.

Assigned clinic locations, travel frequency, geographic coverage, and overnight expectations will be discussed before acceptance.
