Job description:

Nurse Practitioner | Hepatology and Gastroenterology

Liver Institute, PLLC | Tucson, Arizona
Full Time | Onsite with Regular Satellite Clinic Travel

General NP experience: Approximately $140,000 annually
GI or hepatology experience: Approximately $165,000 annually or higher, depending on qualifications
Additional $200 per satellite clinic day, mileage reimbursement, and annual performance incentive eligibility

NorTek Medical Staffing is recruiting an experienced Nurse Practitioner for Liver Institute, PLLC, an established specialty practice focused on comprehensive liver care.

This opportunity combines outpatient patient care, specialty procedures, clinical research, and ongoing education. The practice is seeking a provider with a strong clinical foundation, sound judgment, and the ability to take ownership of patient care while continuing to develop expertise in hepatology.

Experienced NPs transitioning from general practice will be considered, with training and supervision adjusted to their clinical background and demonstrated competency. Candidates with directly relevant gastroenterology or hepatology experience are especially encouraged to apply.

New graduate Nurse Practitioners are not currently being considered.

About the Practice

Established in 2015, Liver Institute provides evaluation and management of liver disease, including advanced liver disease, liver failure, fatty liver disease, and care following liver transplantation.

The practice expanded into outpatient procedures in 2019 and established its research department in 2022. Its Fatty Liver Clinic complements its broader specialty services.

Medical Director Dr. Shahid Habib is a transplant hepatologist with advanced training in hepatology and liver transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Clinical Responsibilities

The Nurse Practitioner will manage an outpatient liver clinic schedule with an expected volume of approximately 16 to 20 patients per day.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including medical histories, physical examinations, and review of relevant records.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients within the NP’s authorized scope of practice and demonstrated competency.
  • Review laboratory results and diagnostic studies to guide clinical assessment and treatment planning.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans.
  • Manage follow up care and recognize changes requiring further evaluation or physician consultation.
  • Educate patients and families about diagnoses, medications, treatment adherence, lifestyle modifications, and ongoing disease management.
  • Learn and perform paracentesis and therapeutic phlebotomy following appropriate training, competency assessment, and practice requirements.
  • Follow established clinical workflows and treatment protocols based on American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases guidelines.
  • Use the practice’s standardized clinical note template and maintain accurate, timely documentation.
  • Collaborate with the hepatology team and communicate appropriately with the supervising or consulting physician.
  • Support continuity of care across Tucson and assigned satellite clinics.

Clinical Research Responsibilities

The position includes participation in clinical research as a subinvestigator, described by the practice as a sub PI, in accordance with sponsor protocols and assigned responsibilities.

The NP will be expected to:

  • Follow applicable study protocols and established research workflows.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate documentation for research participant appointments.
  • Coordinate with the physician and research team regarding assigned patient care and study activities.
  • Participate consistently in assigned clinical, research, educational, and operational responsibilities.

Orientation and Ongoing Education

One week of paid orientation is provided to introduce the practice’s:

  • Clinical workflow and operational expectations.
  • Standardized documentation template.
  • Clinical protocols and note requirements.
  • Assigned responsibilities and communication processes.

Orientation pay is calculated hourly based on the candidate’s agreed annual base salary.

Orientation focuses on learning the practice’s systems and expectations. It does not replace the clinical foundation required of an experienced NP or constitute a residency or comprehensive specialty training program.

Providers without GI or hepatology experience must develop the specialty knowledge needed for their responsibilities through ongoing learning, clinical guidance, and independent study. Training and supervision will be adjusted to prior experience and demonstrated competency.

Mandatory educational sessions take place every Monday at 7:00 PM. Topics include liver disease, clinical management, research, and practice protocols. Session duration and participation arrangements will be reviewed during the hiring process.

Candidates must be prepared to:

  • Continue independent study outside scheduled clinical hours when needed.
  • Review medical literature and research publications.
  • Purchase and read recommended medical textbooks or educational materials when appropriate, as addressed in the practice’s screening questionnaire.
  • Demonstrate continued progress in clinical knowledge and specialty competency.

Schedule and Clinic Coverage

Regular working hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, including a one hour lunch break.

The practice has described the following coverage expectations:

  • Approximately 3 to 4 satellite clinic days outside Tucson per week, depending on assigned locations and operational needs.
  • 2 clinic days per week in Tucson.
  • Approximately twice monthly Saturday clinic coverage in Tucson.
  • Mandatory Monday educational sessions at 7:00 PM.

The final weekly rotation, total workdays, Saturday arrangements, and allocation of Tucson and satellite coverage will be confirmed during the hiring process.

This is an onsite position requiring consistent availability, flexibility across clinic locations, and commitment to the full clinical and educational schedule.

Travel and Overnight Stays

Regular travel to satellite clinics is an essential part of the position.

  • Business mileage is reimbursed at the applicable IRS mileage rate.
  • A $200 travel bonus per satellite clinic day is paid in addition to base compensation.
  • An overnight stay may be appropriate when a satellite assignment requires more than approximately two hours of driving each way.
  • The practice covers reasonable lodging expenses when approved.
  • Overnight arrangements must be communicated, approved, and scheduled in advance. Providers may not independently arrange overnight stays on an ad hoc basis.

Assigned clinic locations, travel frequency, geographic coverage, and overnight expectations will be discussed before acceptance.

Compensation

Compensation depends on clinical experience, specialty background, demonstrated competency, training needs, and agreed responsibilities.

NPs with approximately 2 to 3 years of general NP experience

Approximately $135,971 annual base salary, with additional specialty learning and training required.

NPs with gastroenterology or hepatology experience

Approximately $165,000 annual base salary or higher, depending on relevant experience and qualifications. Compensation may be negotiated.

Additional compensation

  • $200 per assigned satellite clinic day.
  • Business mileage reimbursement at the applicable IRS rate.
  • Annual performance incentive eligibility.

The annual performance incentive is based on productivity measured by completed patient encounters, rather than the dollar amount or revenue generated by individual visits. Specific targets, eligibility, and payment terms will be reviewed during the hiring process.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Appropriate national NP certification.
  • Arizona NP practice credentials in place before providing clinical services.
  • Active DEA registration or eligibility to obtain it, as applicable to assigned responsibilities.
  • Prior NP clinical experience, with approximately 2 to 3 years of general NP experience identified as a consideration pathway.
  • Gastroenterology, hepatology, or liver disease experience preferred.
  • Strong clinical assessment, chronic disease management, patient education, and communication skills.
  • Strong documentation skills, including readiness to document research participant visits.
  • Ability to work independently within individual competency while seeking appropriate physician consultation.
  • Willingness to follow standardized documentation, clinical protocols, and established workflows.
  • Availability for satellite clinic travel, assigned Saturday coverage, and mandatory Monday evening education.
  • Commitment to ongoing independent learning and professional development.
  • Ability to attend an in person interview in Tucson if selected to proceed.

Benefits

Benefits may include:

  • Health insurance.
  • 401(k).
  • Paid time off.
  • Sick leave.
  • Business mileage reimbursement.
  • Satellite clinic travel bonus.
  • Annual performance incentive.
  • Approved lodging for qualifying satellite assignments.

Benefit eligibility, coverage, leave provisions, incentive terms, and expense policies will be reviewed during the hiring process.

Professional Expectations

The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliable attendance, professional boundaries, and ownership of assigned responsibilities.

The practice expects providers to deliver attentive patient care, complete documentation promptly, communicate effectively with colleagues, follow established protocols, and remain flexible regarding clinic assignments.

Candidates should be prepared to discuss their expectations for clinical and nonclinical work, scheduling limitations, professional development, and the conditions necessary for a successful long term employment relationship.

Interview Process

Candidates must complete the practice’s Candidate Pre Interview Questionnaire before a phone interview is scheduled.

The questionnaire addresses:

  • Professional background and relevant disclosures concerning conduct, disciplinary actions, license restrictions, malpractice matters, or investigations.
  • Interest in the practice and goals for the next opportunity.
  • Compensation expectations.
  • Clinical and nonclinical responsibilities.
  • Active state licenses, Arizona licensure status, and DEA registration.
  • Schedule availability and ongoing commitments.
  • Independent learning, literature review, and educational participation.
  • Satellite clinic travel and geographic limitations.
  • Employment expectations and long term commitment.

An in person interview in Tucson, Arizona, is required as part of the hiring process for candidates selected to proceed.

Please provide your current CV, national certification, Arizona licensing status, DEA status, relevant NP experience, compensation expectations, interview availability, and earliest realistic start date.

Please also identify any limitations affecting satellite travel, Saturday coverage, Monday evening education, or attendance at an in person interview in Tucson.
