Cardiology Nurse Practitioner

Position Summary

The Cardiology Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides advanced clinical care to patients with cardiovascular conditions across inpatient and/or outpatient settings. Working collaboratively with cardiologists and the multidisciplinary care team, the NP evaluates patients, manages acute and chronic cardiac conditions, and supports continuity of cardiovascular care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive cardiovascular assessments, including histories and physical examinations

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic cardiac conditions

  • Conduct inpatient rounds and/or outpatient clinic visits as applicable

  • Order, interpret, and document diagnostic tests including ECGs, echocardiograms, stress tests, and laboratory studies

  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physicians

  • Manage cardiac medications and provide guideline-directed medical therapy

  • Monitor patient response to treatment and adjust care plans accordingly

  • Assist with or manage cardiac procedures within scope of practice (e.g., cardioversion support, stress testing, device follow-ups)

  • Provide patient and family education on cardiovascular disease, medications, lifestyle modification, and follow-up care

  • Coordinate care with nursing, pharmacy, cardiac rehabilitation, and consulting services

  • Ensure accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record

  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and cardiology service initiatives

Clinical Areas May Include

  • General cardiology

  • Heart failure management

  • Electrophysiology support

  • Preventive cardiology

  • Post-procedural and post-hospital follow-up

Schedule

  • Day shift with variable hours

  • May include limited call, evenings, or weekends depending on service needs

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program (Adult or Acute Care preferred)

  • Current national certification as a Nurse Practitioner

  • Active or eligible state licensure

  • BLS certification required; ACLS preferred

  • Prior cardiology, internal medicine, hospital medicine, or critical care experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong cardiovascular assessment and clinical decision-making skills

  • Proficiency in ECG interpretation and cardiac diagnostics

  • Ability to function effectively in fast-paced inpatient or outpatient settings

  • Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills

  • Commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care

Work Environment

  • Hospital inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and procedural areas

  • Requires standing, walking, and frequent patient interaction

  • Exposure to moderate- to high-acuity cardiac patients depending on role
