University of Kentucky

Founded in 1865 as a land-grant institution adjacent to downtown Lexington, the University of Kentucky (UK) is nestled in the scenic heart of the beautiful Bluegrass Region. UK’s campus now covers more than 918 acres and is home to over 36,000 students and more than 3,000 full-time faculty. UK is one of a small number of universities in the United States that has programs in agriculture, engineering, the health sciences (dentistry, health sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and public health), law and fine arts on a single campus, leading to groundbreaking discoveries and unique transdisciplinary collaboration.

Health Colleges

The University of Kentucky has seven health-related colleges: Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Public Health. This collection of colleges results in rare opportunities for academic and clinical collaborations. One such collaboration is the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), which serves as a component of the University of Kentucky’s efforts to become a national model for discovery and have a clinical commitment for impact in a state with concerning levels of health challenges. The Center focuses on how best to enhance the value of clinical research in an integrated health delivery system.

UK HealthCare

Established in 1957, UK’s academic health system includes the University’s clinical enterprise: UK HealthCare. Today, UK HealthCare is the clinical home to over 900 residents and fellows, over 800 medical students and students from all seven of UK’s health colleges.

UK HealthCare also employs more than 15,000 full- and part-time employees and is one of the largest employers in the region. As an academic research institution, healthcare professionals are continuously pursuing the next generation of cures, treatments, protocols and policies while educators and thought leaders in health policy and delivery are transforming the healthcare landscape in Kentucky to provide the right care in the right place for everyone in the state.

Extending across Central and Eastern Kentucky, UK HealthCare includes six owned hospitals, more than 1,700 total licensed beds, more than 2.95 million ambulatory visits and 71,000 total discharges in fiscal year 2024. Finally, UK HealthCare manages Eastern State Hospital which provides acute care mental health services in central Kentucky.

Since 2003, the number of licensed inpatient beds in Lexington has grown from 463 to 1,150 – this includes Chandler Hospital, Kentucky Children’s Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital. UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital includes the only Level 1 Trauma Center for adult patients in Central and Eastern Kentucky.

Additionally, UK HealthCare includes Kentucky Clinic, the multi-disciplinary ambulatory clinic located next to UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, as well as outreach clinics and programs throughout Central and Eastern Kentucky. UK recently acquired two hospitals in rural regions of Kentucky. In 2022, King’s Daughters became part of the University of Kentucky.

Serving nearly 400,000 residents in eastern Kentucky, southern Ohio and western West Virginia, UK King’s Daughters is comprised of two acute-care hospitals totaling 465 licensed beds; an integrated network of more than 500 physicians and advanced practitioners; more than 80 outpatient locations throughout eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio; a skilled nursing facility (SNF); medical transport company; eight urgent care centers and a child day care center.

UK King’s Daughters is also the region’s largest employer, with more than 5,500 team members providing a broad range of primary and specialty care services, including cardiovascular, orthopedics, oncology, stroke/neurology, maternity and Level 3 neonatal intensive care.

Morehead-based St. Claire HealthCare officially became part of the University of Kentucky in July 2024. Consisting of 149 beds, UK St. Claire is one of the largest employers in the greater Morehead region with more than 1,300 employees including over 125 physicians and nearly 70 advanced practice professionals representing more than 30 medical specialties.
