Company History
Saint Peter's General Hospital opened in 1907 in the Victorian home of former postmaster Charles Russell at Somerset and Hardenburgh streets in New Brunswick, following the strong encouragement of Monsignor John O'Grady, pastor of Saint Peter's Church Sppanj. The hospital was run by six Grey Nuns of Montreal, along with eight local physicians and six staff members, and began as a modest 25-bed facility. The hospital admitted its first patient on November 8, 1907—a 28-year-old stenographer with a "floating kidney" Sppanj—and within a month, demand had already exceeded capacity. As the hospital rapidly expanded with new wings for maternity care and pediatrics in the 1910s, it eventually moved to its current nine-acre location on Easton Avenue in 1929, land donated by the Diocese of Trenton that had formerly housed Saint Mary's Orphan Asylum. Over the decades, Saint Peter's underwent significant growth and leadership changes, with the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace taking over from the Grey Nuns, and ownership transferring to the Diocese of Metuchen in 1982. In 2007, the organization formally became Saint Peter's Healthcare System, reflecting its evolution from a small community hospital into a comprehensive, technologically advanced 478-bed teaching hospital that continues to serve central New Jersey with distinction.
