About the Role
Stafingo is seeking a Board Certified Vascular Surgeon to provide on-site clinical coverage at a VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA. This is a long-term, recurring contract opportunity (multi-year engagement) offering steady scheduled shifts plus supplemental on-call work.
Schedule
• Day shifts: Monday–Friday, 8.5 hours/day (clinic and OR coverage)
• Weeknight call: Periodic 15.5-hour on-call shifts (4:30 PM–8:00 AM)
• Weekend call: Periodic 63.5-hour on-call shifts (Friday 4:30 PM–Monday 8:00 AM)
• Callback: Paid hourly when called back to the facility during an on-call period
Compensation
• $3,700/day for standard on-site clinical shifts (~$435/hour)
• $1,300/shift weeknight call stipend
• $5,000/shift weekend call stipend
• $600/hour for callback hours
• Weekly or bi-weekly direct deposit
• Malpractice/professional liability insurance provided ($1M per occurrence / $3M aggregate)
Requirements
• Current, full and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or DC (Pennsylvania license required prior to start)
• Board Certification in Vascular Surgery, current and in good standing
• Active DEA registration
• National Provider Identifier (NPI)
• Ability to pass VA credentialing/privileging (VetPro) and background vetting
• Current ACLS/BLS certification
• Up-to-date immunizations/screenings: TB (TST/IGRA), MMR, Varicella, Tdap, influenza, COVID-19 documentation
• Clean OIG exclusion list status
• Fluent English (spoken and written)

Services are provided on-site at a VA Medical Center, delivering the full range of vascular surgery care to Veterans, with the standard of care meeting or exceeding American College of Surgeons guidelines.

Job Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities – Vascular Surgeon (Wilkes-Barre VAMC)

CLINICAL DUTIES (approximately 95% of time)

Provide vascular care within approved privileges and scope of practice, across a wide range of patient ages, backgrounds, and diagnoses, including evaluation, diagnosis, pre-operative, operative, and post-operative management in:

Vascular system (excluding intracranial vessels, the heart, and vessels intrinsic/immediately adjacent to the heart).

Endocrine system.

Surgical oncology, including coordinated multimodality cancer management (screening, surveillance, surgical adjunctive therapy, rehabilitation, follow-up).

Trauma management, following patients through the full continuum of care (admissions through discharge).

Coordinate diagnostic testing prior to surgical procedures.

Educate and counsel patients and family members.

Provide professional direction to nursing staff.

Clinic and Surgical Care: be physically present on time for all scheduled clinics and surgeries (documented presence at scheduled start time).

Consultation Responsibilities: advise referring physicians on appropriate indications for vascular procedures; determine treatment course and communicate with referring clinicians (in person or by phone).

Review consults and next-day patient cases for a minimum of 2 hours daily.

Provide post-procedure evaluation, follow-up, and clinical consultation regarding complications.

Follow established medication policies (no sample medications).

Provide discharge education and follow-up instructions coordinated with the next care setting.

Ensure test-result notification mechanisms are followed (VHA Directive 1088).

TEACHING / SUPERVISORY DUTIES

Provide an academic environment and didactic teaching for Health Professions Trainees (HPTs) rotating through Vascular Surgery.

Supervise HPTs per VHA Directive 1400.01 and Handbook 1400.04; oversee clinical skill development.

Complete periodic HPT evaluations; ensure notes/encounters reflect supervising practitioner involvement.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES (approximately 5% of time)

Participate in Quality Improvement meetings/committees: Operative and Invasive Committee (monthly), Morbidity and Mortality (monthly).

Attend Surgical Staff Meetings (monthly) and Hospital Morning Rounds (daily).

Perform peer reviews as applicable.

Complete QM/PI documentation for all procedures, complications, and outcomes.

Follow patient safety and infection control standards; report incidents to Program POC within 24 hours via VA Patient Safety Reporting System.

STANDARDS OF CARE

Meet or exceed standards set by the American College of Surgeons, The Joint Commission, and the American Hospital Association, plus all PWS requirements.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

100% Board Certification (per ACR standards), reviewed quarterly.

100% scope-of-practice/privileging compliance, monitored continuously.

100% on-time/availability for scheduled services.

100% patient safety incident reporting within 24 hours.

OPPE reviewed quarterly.

Qualifications

Qualifications – Vascular Surgeon (Wilkes-Barre VAMC)

LICENSE

Current, full and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, or DC.

Individual DEA registration in the state of service (in addition to state medical license).

Physicians with a license ever restricted, suspended, revoked, voluntarily surrendered pending action, or denied will not be considered.

BOARD CERTIFICATION

Board Certified (Vascular Surgery).

Continuing education for certification maintenance must be kept current at all times; proof submitted annually to the Surgical Service COR.

CREDENTIALING AND PRIVILEGING

Credentialed and privileged per VHA Directive 1100.20 and 1100.21; approval required from the Wilkes-Barre VAMC Professional Standards Board, Medical Executive Board, and Medical Center Director before services begin.

Contractor must furnish an acceptable substitute at no added cost if credentials/privileges lapse, are suspended, or revoked.

TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY

Technically proficient in required surgical/clinical skills; fluent in spoken/written English.

Must provide proof of competency, certification, and licensure on request, plus full educational/training history including any gaps.

Must abide by facility Medical Staff By-Laws, rules, and regulations.

CONTINUING EDUCATION (CME/CEU)

Must maintain CME/CEU hours per national/medical association standards.

Must report CME hours to the credentialing office; failure results in loss of privileges.

Working Hours

Schedule

Clinic/OR shifts: Monday–Friday, 8.5 hours/day (clinic 8:00 AM–4:30 PM; OR team 7:30 AM–3:30 PM)

On-call coverage required during all hours the clinic is closed (evenings, weekends, holidays), capped at 1,200 call hours/year

On-call response requirement: available by phone within 15 minutes, on-site within 60 minutes

FTE: .9995 (VA standard: 2,080 hours/year)
