Job description Surgical Director Heart Transplant

Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and the University of South Florida (USF Health) invite applications for Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation. This is a rare leadership opportunity to direct and expand a high-performing, nationally prominent transplant program within a rapidly growing academic health system known for innovation, quality, and scale.

Tampa General Hospital (TGH) - the primary teaching hospital for USF - is ranked #1 in the nation for transplants, completing 889 transplants in 2024, a new national record. Since 1974, TGH has performed over 14,000 transplants, more than doubling its annual volume in the last six years.

* Lead surgical strategy, performance, and growth for adult heart transplantation
* Partner with heart failure cardiology, anesthesia, perfusion, CTICU, and transplant operations to drive outcomes, throughput, and patient experience
* Advance and integrate mechanical circulatory support (LVAD/ECMO/temporary support) as a unified heart replacement and recovery platform
* Leverage institutional capabilities in advanced donor pathways and organ preservation technologies (e.g., DCD platforms and perfusion innovation)
* Seeking a proven heart transplant surgeon with leadership readiness: outcomes-driven, collaborative, and comfortable building a "team-of-teams"
* Expertise in donor evaluation and acceptance strategy, complex reoperative surgery, and high-acuity perioperative decision-making
* Track record in quality improvement, program development, and multidisciplinary alignment
* Strong Academic background and ability to contribute to education and scholarship
* Active involvement in resident/fellow/medical student teaching
* Strong environment for clinical and translational research, including institutional and industry-sponsored studies
* Robust APP/ICU/OR infrastructure supporting high-acuity CT and transplant care, including a specialized CTICU model>
