Job description
We are seeking a board-certified (or board-eligible) Neurosurgeon to provide weekend 24-hour call coverage in Virginia. This position involves emergent cases only – no elective surgeries or clinic duties required during weekends. Must be able to independently perform craniotomies and spine surgeries. Clean backgrounds and active VA licenses are a must. Opportunity for locum-to-perm if desired.
Job Responsibilities
Coverage Type: 24-hour call on weekends (Friday 7am – Monday 7am)
Frequency: No more than one weekend per month
Shift Type: Day, Night, Weekend
Weekday Details (optional for longer-term): 7a-4p clinic + night call
Call Only: Yes – weekends only
EMR: Epic
Qualifications
Department: Bread and butter neurosurgery
Procedures: Must perform craniotomies and spine surgeries
Patient Type: Adults only
Volume: Emergent cases only – TBD
No Clinic or Elective Cases on Weekends
Working Hours
State License: Must hold active Virginia license
Certifications: BLS, ACLS
Experience: Minimum 2 years
DEA: Required for VA
Vaccines: TBD
Background: Must have clean background (dismissed cases okay)
Skills
Proficiency in spine surgery (emergent)
Ability to manage high-acuity neurosurgical emergencies
Competency with Epic EMR
Comfortable working independently with minimal support staff
Strong decision-making skills in time-sensitive situations
Excellent communication and collaboration with hospital teams
Adherence to hospital protocols and documentation standards
DEA and controlled substance prescribing for VA
