The general surgeon has specialized knowledge and experience related to the diagnosis, preoperative, operative, and postoperative management, including the management of complications General Surgeon duties include: Determine if surgery is warranted, based on the patient's records, tests, and examinations; Performs examinations to confirm patients can undergo surgery, explain the procedures, and discuss the risks involved, determine the type of surgery and coordinates with other members of the surgical team to include the nurses, anesthesiologists, specialists, and others who will be required. Order antibiotics, special diets, sedatives, and other prescriptions for pre- and post-operative treatment; Schedule operations, coordinate with the appropriate staff and in relation to needed equipment: Perform operations, in accordance with accepted methods; Create and update patient records according to medical center policy; Consult with and assist other doctors; Refer patients to appropriate specialists and other professionals; The General Surgeon performs a full range of general surgery procedures. They assure the provision of high quality and safe patient care both in and outside of the operating room. Duties may include but are not limited to: a.) Providing pre-operative and post-operative general surgical services including rounds for surgical patients. b.) Performing a full range of general surgery procedures in the operating room for a standard level surgical complexity level VA facility c.) Advising and consulting with providers in other services concerning surgery or potential surgery cases. d.) Provides a full range of services including assessment and using the most appropriate medical/surgical techniques in providing quality care in general surgery e.) Performs appropriate evaluations for patients. f.) Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions of a general surgeon to units/programs in the Medical Center and has clinical privileges to practice including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management. Coordinates care with other disciplines in the medical center g.) Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences, and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members in a manner that enhances coordination of comprehensive patient care. h.) Orders diagnostic tests and discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions. I.) Ensures that the practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, VA policies and procedures, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPPA policies. j.) Participates in quality management program with collection of data and participates in the review of mid-level provider data and quality management reports. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; day shift 8:00am - 4:30pm.
