About this role:

The Thoracic Surgery APP provides advanced clinical support to dedicated thoracic (non cardiac) surgeons in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of thoracic surgery patients. The APP works as a highly valued and integral member of the team that performs surgical first assist duties, manages perioperative care, and ensures safe and effective patient outcomes in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

You will be joining an established group with 3 dedicated general thoracic surgeons and 5 experienced APPs at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, a level-1 trauma center; providing comprehensive thoracic surgical care. Call is 1:5 nights, weekends and is backed up by the surgeons.

The practice, and the Cardiovascular department, use a team-based approach to deliver high-quality, nationally recognized care. You will split your time assisting in the OR, working in a hospital inpatient setting (rounding and consultation) as well as in the outpatient clinic setting with the opportunity to participate in the evaluation and postoperative care of these patients. This wide range of experiences will help you develop new skills and understand how to care for Thoracic surgical patients during all phases of their journey.

Key Responsibilities:

  • First assist in thoracic surgical procedures including laparoscopic, open, thoracoscopic procedures and bedside assist in robotic procedures (lung lobectomy, paraesophageal hernia, esophagectomy, etc.)

  • Perform bedside and office-based procedures, such as thoracentesis and chest tube placement.

  • Evaluate and care for patients in the cardiothoracic surgery clinic

  • Provide postoperative wound checks, medication management, and patient education.

  • Assist with pre-op optimization and post-op follow-up planning.

  • Assist the team with rounding on admitted patients and writing progress notes, orders, and care plans

  • Participate in hospital consults for the cardiothoracic surgery service

  • Discharge patients from the hospital

An ideal candidate will have the following skills and competencies:

  • Two or more years of surgical experience preferred, ideally in cardio or thoracic surgery

  • Strong procedural and surgical technical skills.

  • Ability to interpret EKGs, imaging, and hemodynamic data.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork capabilities.

  • Strong critical thinking and independent decision-making within the scope of practice.

What you’ll bring:

  • Current UT state license as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA).

  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

  • Eligible for State Controlled Substance License II through V.

  • Eligible for Federal DEA Certificate II through V.

  • BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers.

  • Other certification as required (e.g. ACLS, PALS, TNCC, NRP).

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
